That this House notes the upcoming 500th anniversary of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge, fought on 4 September 1526; welcomes the extensive year‑long programme of community events organised by Battle 500; recognises the contribution of the Linlithgow Civic Trust in convening local organisations, historians, performers and volunteers to create an inclusive programme for residents of all ages; commends the variety of activities scheduled from lectures by historians to performances by the Linlithgow Players; further commends the efforts of historical storytelling displayed at the Spectacular Jousting at Linlithgow Palace, the summer performances by the Linlithgow Arts Guild and Edinburgh Renaissance Band, and the special exhibition at Linlithgow Museum; observes a commemoration ceremony will take place at the Lennox Cairn involving local schools and community groups; highlights that events will culminate with a full re‑enactment of the battle, co‑ordinated by the Scottish Battlefields Trust, featuring a medieval camp and demonstrations of 16th‑century cooking and weaponry; and also commends the Battle 500 organisers and the wider community for bringing rich local history to life.

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment she has made of the potential merits of further permitted development protections for registered historic battlefields in England.
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment she has made of the potential merits of further permitted development protections for registered historic battlefields in England.
The government is committed to the protection of the historic environment.
We consider new permitted development rights, and amendments to existing ones, on a case-by-case basis.
Changes to permitted development rights are generally made following public consultation, including consideration of any impacts on the historic environment.
Local planning authorities can also remove national permitted development rights where it is necessary to protect local amenity or the well-being of an area by introducing an ‘Article 4’ direction.
That this House notes the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Crossgar, which took place on St Patricks Day 1849 when over 3,000 Catholic Ribbonmen descended on Crossgar and clashed with local Orangemen; highlights that due to this riot all parades were subsequently banned, but not before a retaliation battle at Dollys Brae later that summer; underlines the tremendous efforts of influential Orangeman, William Johnston MP of Ballykilbeg who was instrumental in getting the parading ban repealed in 1872 and who three years later laid the foundation stone for Killyleagh Street Orange Hall which still remains today; and further highlights the significance of this event for Orange heritage and that the history of this event will not be forgotten.

It is important that we give veterans the opportunity to return to the battlefields. I think that my right hon. Friend is referring to a return to the Falklands. I will endeavour to see what can be done, and whether we can use the air bridge to allow veterans to return to that battle place.
