[holding answer 24 January 2013]: The decision to continue grant funding to Booktrust was taken on its own merits by the Secretary of State for Education, my right hon. Friend the Member for Surrey Heath (Michael Gove), on the basis of advice from officials. The advice was copied to the private secretaries of David Laws and Edward Timpson.

[holding answer 17 December 2012]: The following table sets out the grant funding allocated to Booktrust by the Department for book gifting from the families group programme funding budget.

The Department is currently in discussion with Booktrust about the shape of the book gifting scheme they will deliver for the ÂŁ6/6 million grant funding that they have been offered for 2013-15.
In addition in 2010-11 they received a grant of ÂŁ150,000 for the Everybody Writes Project, which was paid from the Standards in English budget.

Ministers have a legitimate and proper role in decisions relating to the award of public funding to charities. The decision to award grant funding to Booktrust for 2013-15 was taken by the Secretary of State for Education on the basis of advice from officials. The amounts awarded to Booktrust are ÂŁ6 million for the period 2013-14 and a further ÂŁ6 million in 2014-15. Internal records and e-mails relating to such decisions are not routinely disclosed. The cabinet secretary has replied to a letter from my hon. Friend and a copy has been placed in the Library of the House.
