To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, with reference to her oral statement on Spending Review 2025, Official Report, column 985, for what reason she referenced Swansea and Bridgend in the context of the extension of free school meals in England.
The government will provide £410 million per year by 2028-29 to expand Free School Meals eligibility from September 2026 to all pupils in England with a parent receiving Universal Credit.
The Barnett formula will apply in the normal way; education is a devolved matter and so the Welsh Government is responsible for Free School Meals policy in Wales.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and I both live in Wales and serve Welsh constituencies. We have a consistent presence in Wales as we conduct many visits, events and meetings in Wales on a regular basis.
Details of Ministerial visits and meetings are published on the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales’ website and in Quarterly Ministerial Transparency Returns. In addition, visits and meetings conducted in support of the Wales Office priorities are published in the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales Annual Report and Accounts.
The UK Government has provided extensive support to Bridgend. A typical household in Wales has received almost £2000 in UK Government support to help with the cost of living. This includes around 225,000 payments delivered in Bridgend through the Energy Bills Support Scheme. During the Covid-19 pandemic around 14,000 jobs were supported through the furlough scheme, around £24 million was claimed through the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme and over £63 million was given to businesses through government-backed business loans.
The UK Government has also supported innovation within Bridgend with around £1.5 million awarded by Innovate UK since April 2019. Bridgend has also received around £6,000 through the Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme to level up local sports facilities.
In addition, Bridgend County Borough Council, the local authority for the Bridgend constituency, is receiving over £23 million from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Bridgend is also receiving nearly £18 million from the Levelling Up Fund for a major re-development of the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl. Bridgend also benefits from the £1.2 billion Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, including the £50 million region-wide sites and premises fund.
This Government is investing in Wales like never before; over £790 million in four City and Regional Growth Deals covering the whole of Wales, £585 million for local authorities to invest through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, including over £100 million for the Multiply adult numeracy programme, £330 million in capital investment through the Levelling Up Fund and £3.2 million to preserve community assets through the Community Ownership Fund. Wales will benefit from two Freeports backed by £52 million, the British Business Bank’s new £130m Regional Investment Fund, and from Project Gigabit which will enable hard to reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit capable broadband.
On behalf of my constituents in Bridgend, may I warmly congratulate the Prime Minister on delivering on the promise made to the British people that we will leave the European Union? Will he reassure my constituents that, now that we are taking back control of our money, our borders and our laws, every effort will be made to bring jobs and investment to areas such as Bridgend that feel left behind?

To ask Her Majesty's Government what discussions they have had with Bridgend County Borough Council about attracting investment for Bridgend and reducing the impact on workers from any closure of the Ford engine plant.
Her Majestyâs Government is committed to working closely with the Welsh Government to consider, and where possible, mitigate the impact of Fordâs decision to close its Bridgend Engine Plant. The Welsh Government, the Wales Office, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the Department for International Trade came together with the company, local leaders, unions and Bridgend County Borough Council for the first meeting of the Ford Bridgend Taskforce on 1 July.
Jointly sponsored by Welsh Government Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates and my rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales, and chaired by Professor Richard Parry-Jones, the Taskforce has been established to support Ford workers, communities and local economy following the companyâs decision to close their operation in Bridgend from Autumn 2020.
Bridgend County Borough Council is expected to have a key role in the activities of this Taskforce, as part of wider joint efforts to support the workers and the wider community.

I am extremely disappointed with Ford’s intention to close its Bridgend plant in 2020. However, this bad news is not a reflection of the Welsh economy as a whole.

I have no doubt that the closure of the Ford plant in Bridgend will have huge consequences along the M4 corridor, damaging our economy, including in Bristol South. Just when will we see the start of any kind of industrial strategy? Right now, with continued closures and the impact of this closure on the supply chain, we are going backward, not forward, and that damages the economy in Bristol South.

The terms of the separation packages for Ford Bridgend Engine plant workers have only recently been communicated by the company.
Ford has indicated that they will seek to avoid compulsory redundancies. They have also stated that they will be offering generous voluntary redundancy packages and options for redeployment.
United Kingdom Government and Welsh Government are working together to support Ford workers and the local community.
