To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, whether he plans to continue implementation of the five goals of the UK Strategy for Engagement with CERN.
The UK is a founding member of CERN, and we are committed to our membership of this globally unique organisation. The government wants to ensure that the UK are maximising the benefits of CERN membership captured in the CERN Strategy. The UK will continue to work closely with CERN now and in the future to drive research excellence, foster talent & skills and inspire the science community, while working to increase returns to UK industry and strengthening our relationships with all our fellow CERN Member States.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, whether it is Government policy to support the creation of the Future Circular Collider; and if he will make a statement.

As a member of CERN’s governing Council, the UK has agreed to the 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, and to the commencement of a technical and financial feasibility study for a next-generation hadron collider.
I rise to discuss the UK tax treatment of CERN pensioners, but the subject goes rather wider than purely CERN. I mention CERN only because I have two or three constituents who are quite exercised by recent changes.

I can always count on my hon. Friend the Member for Spelthorne (Kwasi Kwarteng) to put me in my place.

I thank the Minister for that offer. This is a complex area, and I think that my constituents would be grateful for at least a brief meeting just to go through some of their concerns, outside the public spotlight.

I thank my hon. Friend. This is a complicated area. I hope that my comments today have provided some answers to him and his constituents, but of course I would be happy to meet him and to bring along Treasury officials, who might be able to shed further light on...

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what his policy is on future British involvement in the European Organization for Nuclear Research and the CERN research facility.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are separate organisations from the European Union and thus the UK’s memberships of CERN or ESA are not dependent on its EU membership. The UK will continue to play a leading role in major non-EU research collaborations, including CERN and ESA. In July we confirmed the UK’s application to become a full member of a major new particle accelerator, the European Spallation Source in Sweden.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government how much money they contribute to the Large Hadron Collider; and what assessment they have made of the commercial and scientific benefits to justify continued financial support for the project from public funds.

I note the active interest in this regulation by the Conservative Opposition, so I rise to represent, I suppose, both parties, and to raise a number of general questions. I am a little puzzled. I know CERN relatively well: my daughter’s partner worked there for his PhD. As I understand...
