I understand that the Home Secretary is visiting Calais today. I hope that she will not only see the beaches from which illegal immigrants depart for the United Kingdom, but visit the facility that I saw myself a week ago today, with Michael Keohan and Jack Valpy from BBC South...

The right hon. Member is absolutely right: the situation in relation to the small boat crossings continues to be intolerable in many regards. This country cannot sustain what we are seeing. The situation in Calais, including the steps that are being taken, or not, is not acceptable either. That is...

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, if she will take steps to enable people to (a) claim asylum in the UK in Calais and (b) travel safely to the UK once their application has been made.

Whilst we sympathise with people in many difficult situations around the world, we could not possibly consider protection claims from the very large numbers of people overseas who might like to come to the UK. Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach – that is the fastest route to safety.
Our focus is on helping people directly from regions of conflict and instability, and we believe that our resettlement programmes are the best way to provide much needed support.
Although we do not allow claims from abroad, I can confirm, all asylum claims that are admitted to the UK asylum system, are given full and careful consideration so that we do not remove anyone who faces persecution or serious harm to their country of origin.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of (1) shortages of UK Border Force staff in Calais, and (2) the impact of any such shortages on delays to entry to the UK; and what (a) plans they have, and (b) timescale they have established, to address any...

We understand it can be frustrating to have to wait to go through the UK border, but the safety and security of the public will always be our number one priority. There are many factors that influence wait times and we continue to work closely with port operators, industry partners and our French counterparts, to ensure officers are deployed flexibly and when required to meet demand and support passengers.
It is important to note that whilst it may appear that there are shortages of staff when queues form, Border Force resource is deployed not just to carry out essential checks at the border, but also to detect harmful goods and safeguard vulnerable and exploited individuals, which means that at times not all border control points will be open.

We have worked closely with the French Government to respond to the situation in northern France. In partnership with the French Government, we have established a new temporary Visa Application Centre in Arras to provide extra support for those people in Calais who are eligible for our Ukraine schemes. It is operating by referral only.
This is a rapidly shifting situation, and we are keeping our operational response under constant review to ensure we adapt as needed to best support people through this process and keep pace with the evolving picture on the ground.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what discussions they have had with the government of France regarding refugees from Ukraine who wish to enter the UK but have been prevented from moving from Calais to the UK by immigration officials.

The UK Government maintains regular contact with the Government of France at ministerial and official level. The Home Secretary is in regular contact with the French Interior Minister Darmanin she spoke to him recently to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the support the UK is offering to those fleeing the conflict. We have established a temporary Visa Application Centre in northern France, to support vulnerable people who arrive in Calais without a visa. These people will be referred by Border Force to this new site for support.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what her timetable is for the Calais Visa Application Centre for Ukrainian refugees to be open and fully operational.

To support people in Northern France who are eligible for the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Home Office has set up a new temporary Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Arras, replacing the interim site in Lille. The Arras VAC is now open. It will only be used for referrals from Border Force of Ukrainians arriving in Calais without visas.
From Tuesday 15 March, Ukrainians with valid passports who are eligible for this route can do their application online and will not need to go to a Visa Application Centre to give their biometrics before they come to the UK.
To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the remarks by the Home Secretary on 8 March that they have “surged a Home Office team” to help at Calais, why Ukrainian refugees are unable to be processed more rapidly in Calais than at other locations.

Prior to the conflict the Home Office had one Visa Application Centre (VAC) based in France, that being the VAC in Paris.

Individuals eligible for the Ukraine Family Scheme should not travel to Arras or Northern France, but instead apply online (if they hold a valid passport), or make an appointment to attend their nearest VAC in person which is an easier way of getting the permissions to travel to the UK needed.

Staff from the British Embassy in Paris have been supporting Home Office and Border Force officials on the ground, including at the Calais advice centre and through engagement with the French authorities.
As the Home Secretary is straying to points outwith the Bill, I want to address how the airwaves at the weekend were full of criticism—both internal and external to the United Kingdom—of her scheme to help Ukrainian refugees. When will she announce something to speed up the scheme and give...

I am grateful to the hon. and learned Lady for her question, because it gives me the chance to clarify what is happening in a fast-moving picture. As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said, I was in Poland on Friday. This...

Will the Home Secretary clarify whether the Home Office has set up a visa application centre in Calais, or are people still being sent on journeys of hundreds of miles back to Paris or Brussels for the checks that they need to get safely into this country?

Again, for clarification, as I set out in the House last week, we are surging capacity across our VACs to ensure that as many people as possible are getting access. Let me—[Interruption.] If the right hon. Member would like to listen to my response rather than shout from her seat,...

I thank the Secretary of State for what she is doing and the staff put in place to try to help move things on. However, only 50 people have been processed so far, and my constituent, whom I spoke about in the Chamber last week, is in Ukraine today to...

The hon. Member makes an important point. Having been to Poland myself and seen the processes—I am also due to speak to my Romanian counterpart later today—I know that they have issues about capacity. We have had requests for technical capacity and support not just through our VACs but to...

The Home Secretary has a lot of support on the Government Benches for the compassionate and sensible way in which she is going about this. Will she confirm that she is listening both to what the refugees want, which is often not a long-term settlement a long way from Ukraine,...

My right hon. Friend is absolutely right. I must emphasise that every single crisis requires a bespoke and unique response. There are two very big calls coming from the region and from our counterparts. First and foremost, they are asking for help on security measures right now; that consistent theme...

I do not wish to disturb the flow of the Secretary of State’s speech for very long, but I want to make one point. We all know that some of the brightest minds in the City of London are, at this moment, burning the midnight oil and finding ways to...
