That this House recognises the enormous contribution of Mary Anne Stewart to alleviating food poverty in Campbeltown and the surrounding area during her decade as Chair of the Kintyre Food Bank; thanks her for serving as Chairperson of the committee for the past ten years, years in which, unfortunately, the demand for the services of the Food Bank has continued to grow; recognises the selfless dedication of Mary Anne, the committee and all the volunteers of Kintyre Food Bank, without who many in their community would be in desperate need; and wishes everyone involved in the project every success until such times as Food Banks are no longer required in one of the richest countries in the world.

That this House congratulates everyone involved in the establishment of the Robert Black Memorial Helipad in Campbeltown; particularly notes the vital contribution made by Ambulance Technician Stuart McLellan who as well as overcoming many legal and logistical obstacles, also successfully raised £270,000 and attracted the support of many local residents, organisations and businesses including Eric Spence from South Kintrye Development Trust, the County Air Ambulance Trust, MacFadyens Contractors and McKinven and Colville Contractors in order to build the helipad; understands that there has been a need for a community helipad in South Kintyre for many years due to the unsafe nature of the previous landing site, which often resulted in emergencies being diverted to Campbeltown Airport or being forced to make a four hour transfer by road; and commends Stuart and everyone involved for their efforts and recognises the new Robert Black Memorial Helipad as a fitting and lasting tribute to the highly respected and dearly missed Campbeltown Paramedic Robert Black who sadly died of covid-19 in 2020.

That this House congratulates the people of Campbeltown on the town’s recent success at being named Scotland’s Most Improved Place at the prestigious 2020 SURF Awards; particularly recognises the enormous contribution made by James Lafferty and Cara Browning of Argyll and Bute Council who have overseen and managed the £13 million project which has been used to refurbish more than 40 buildings in that town, including the full repair of 11 tenement buildings containing 58 flats, making significant improvements to numerous shopfronts in that town, the transformation of a derelict building into a community backpackers hostel and the restoration of Campbeltown Cross; notes that that award recognises years of dedicated hard work by so many in the local community who have been determined to make Campbeltown an attractive place to live and work with a thriving town centre; and is confident that Campbeltown and the surrounding area has a very bright, positive future as Scotland’s Most Improved Place.

That this House commends the campaign led by the Glen Scotia Distillery in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, to promote their home town as being the whiskiest place in the world; acknowledges that Campbeltown, which once boasted no fewer than 30 legal distilleries in the 1800s and was known in the Victorian era as Capital of Scotch, has played a hugely significant part in the history and development of whisky distilling in Scotland; congratulates Glen Scotia manager Iain McAllister on helping to raise awareness of the importance of Campbeltown to Scotland’s whisky heritage; commends the work being done by Glen Scotia, along with Springbank and the Glengyle/Kilkerran Distilleries, to promote Campbeltown as Scotland’s fifth official malt producing region; recognises that they have raised awareness of the thriving, local whisky industry in the town both at home and internationally; and wishes them all every success in the future as they contribute to one of Scotland’s greatest assets.

Thank you, Mr Speaker. I am glad that Machrihanish is on the shortlist to become the UK’s first spaceport. It is far from any centres of population, it has a 3-km runway
and the facilities of an RAF base, and I believe that it is the ideal candidate. I hope that the Department for Transport will support Machrihanish’s case.

We are certainly looking at all the candidates in Scotland, Wales and England, and we believe that Britain will be at the forefront of the space race to get satellites into space cheaply and to introduce space tourism.

The Government set out in July their ambition to start hosting commercial spaceflights from the UK by 2018. The activity is being driven by a cross-Government team that reports to me as well as to Ministers in the Ministry of Defence and the Department for Transport. We have undertaken a public consultation on the potential locations—including the one in my hon. Friend’s constituency—and the criteria that will be used to select the location of a spaceport. Our response will be published shortly.

I thank the Minister for his answer. When the Government take the decision on the location of Britain’s first spaceport, will they take into account the fact that Machrihanish, with its 3 km runway, all the facilities of the former RAF base and a location that is far from densely populated areas, satisfies the criteria perfectly and is clearly the obvious choice for Britain’s first spaceport?

My hon. Friend has taken the opportunity to make a strong case for Machrihanish. He will not be surprised to hear that some of his hon. Friends make equally persuasive cases for their own constituencies. It shows that this competition has captured the public imagination and is a great one to have been launched.
