To ask His Majesty's Government what safeguarding requirements apply to adult gender dysphoria clinics when patients present with a history of childhood trauma, abuse or serious mental illness.
To ask His Majesty's Government what safeguarding requirements apply to adult gender dysphoria clinics when patients present with a history of childhood trauma, abuse or serious mental illness.
Safeguarding is firmly embedded within the core duties and statutory responsibilities of all organisations that provide National Health Services. The organisations that manage adult gender dysphoria clinics will have reference to NHS England's Safeguarding Accountability and Assurance Framework, 5th edition, published 2026, that sets out the safeguarding roles and responsibilities for NHS-commissioned providers and sets out the legal framework for safeguarding adults.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to help ensure the safety of women at abortion clinics.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to help ensure the safety of women at abortion clinics.
All women in England and Wales should have access to safe, regulated abortions on the National Health Service under our current laws.
Safeguarding is an essential aspect of abortion care, and abortion providers are required to have effective arrangements in place to safeguard children and vulnerable adults accessing their services. Providers must ensure that all staff are trained to recognise the signs of potential abuse and coercion and know how to respond.
As part of standards set by the Care Quality Commission, abortion services must be able to prove that they have processes in place to ensure that all women and girls are seeking services voluntarily. The Department’s Required Standard Operating Procedures also require staff to be able to identify those who require more support than can be provided in the routine abortion service setting, including where there is evidence of coercion.
Section 9 of the Public Order Act 2023 introduced Safe Access Zones outside abortion clinics in England and Wales meaning that it is illegal for anyone to do anything that intentionally or recklessly influences someone’s decision to use abortion services, obstructs them, or causes harassment or distress to someone using or working at these premises. The law applies within a 150 metre radius of the abortion service provider.

To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they have taken since July 2024 to establish early diagnosis clinics for osteoporosis in England; and how many such clinics have been established.
There are no ‘early diagnosis centres’ for osteoporosis as such. Many patients with osteoporosis will be diagnosed in primary care. Additionally, osteoporosis assessment services can be run from a number of different specialities, for example rheumatology, endocrinology, or older people’s medicine.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, if he will make an assessment of the potential merits of opening a dedicated clinic for nuclear test veterans.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, if he will make an assessment of the potential merits of opening a dedicated clinic for nuclear test veterans.
There are currently no plans to make an assessment of the potential merits of a dedicated clinic for nuclear test veterans.
All veterans, including those affected by nuclear testing are able to access a range of National Health Services to meet their clinical needs. British nuclear test veterans who are concerned about their heath should discuss this with their general practitioner.
Over 99.6% of primary care networks in England have at least one general practice accredited under the veteran friendly scheme which raises awareness of the specific needs of veterans.

My Lords, I declare an interest as a former chairwoman of the HFEA. When I was approached for the job, I explained that, at my school, we were not even taught what were then called the “facts of life”. It turned out that this did not matter, as the task...

My Lords, I thank the noble Baroness, Lady Deech, for bringing this matter to the House. At present, the HFEA regulations are under a law that is over 35 years old, as identified by the noble Baroness, Lady Deech, and the legislation is unfit for the purpose in many areas....

My Lords, I would like to come down to earth a little bit. First of all, I suggest that infertility is not a disease; it is actually a symptom of something wrong, and that is the basic problem here. What we are doing here with in vitro fertilisation is using...

My Lords, it is a privilege to follow the noble Lord, Lord Winston. We live in an increasingly digital world. We entrust apps with our fitness data and menstrual cycle, and healthcare providers frequently offer virtual consultations. It is no surprise, therefore, that many people entrust fertility treatment to the...

My Lords, I recognise the depth of expertise in this Chamber and that my background is not a scientific one. However, it is incumbent on us all to engage in these crucial issues, which hold wide significance and implication. I approach this debate in the knowledge of what it is...

My Lords, it is a great pleasure to follow the right reverend Prelate. That was very moving, and I am very pleased that her three children are in this world thanks to the noble Lord, Lord Winston. That is amazing. Like the noble Baroness, Lady Deech, I confess my inner...

My Lords, I pay tribute to the noble Baroness, Lady Deech, for securing this important debate. Before I start, I will just clarify one issue: about 98% of abortion treatment is carried out in the not-for-profit sector, funded around 98% by the NHS. NHS hospitals do not make a profit...

My Lords, I am grateful to the noble Baroness, Lady Deech, for bringing these important questions to the House. Women’s health, fertility, and experience of motherhood are matters that are rarely given the attention they deserve, and I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to learn from the expertise of...

Before the Minister sits down, I wonder whether she would be kind enough to answer one question for me. The figures that I presented on embryo freezing show that there were 909 births, some of which miscarried. However, it is clear that at least 42,000 treatments with embryos were given...
