The Government is determined to ensure that everyone has access to affordable quality sport and physical activity opportunities. That's why we’ve invested £3 million into new all-weather, covered cricket domes this year which ensure accessible sport year-round, building on the £1.5m investment into covered cricket domes made last year. New and refurbished facilities give families low-cost options to stay active, helping when many are facing cost-of-living pressures. The wider sports sector helps to drive good growth in every postcode, something I saw when I visited Loughborough University’s Women in Sport Research and Innovation Hub last year.
Between 2022 and 2029, we are supporting grassroots participation with a £13.4m investment via Sport England and the England & Wales Cricket Board. Earlier this year, the ECB also launched their Building Belonging in Cricket Fund - a £45m investment to improve grassroots cricket facilities and help enable year-round play through the construction of all-weather cricket domes, indoor halls, multi-use games areas and community hubs. The ECB is working with Regional Cricket Boards, including Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Foundation, to identify potential projects.
In order to increase availability and accessibility to the local community, Sport England factors in a site's Community Use Agreement, and their capacity to offer free/low cost bookings when determining whether individual projects should receive funding.
We are collaborating with the sports sector, including the ECB, and local leaders to develop investment plans for a range of sports across the country based on what each community needs.
In my Oxfordshire constituency, Challow and Childrey cricket club’s partnership with local state school King Alfred’s Academy is providing cricket opportunities to students who may not otherwise have access to the sport. However, affordability and perceptions of cricket mean that a participation gap remains between state-funded schools and independent schools. What further steps can the Government take to improve opportunities to participate in sport?

Cricket is incredibly popular, and I know how important it is in my own constituency—I visited Worsbrough to see the England and Wales Cricket Board’s schools programme in action. Programmes like that are incredibly important for getting people, and in particular young people, involved and active in sport.

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, further to the Written Statement of 9 June 2026 on Grassroots Cricket, if she will take steps to invest in multi-sport covered cricket domes in the South West of England, including Dorset.
The Government is determined to ensure that everyone has access to quality sport and physical activity opportunities. That's why we are investing £400 million into new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities, promoting health, wellbeing and community cohesion, while removing the barriers to physical activity for under-represented groups, such as women and girls, people with disabilities, and ethnic minority communities. This investment will continue to be prioritised in areas that have the highest levels of deprivation and inactivity, where there are reduced opportunities for local people.

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what measures are in place to ensure that communities in areas not receiving cricket dome funding benefit from the wider £400 million sports facilities programme.
The five new, all-weather cricket domes’ locations were chosen based on a range of factors relating to indices of deprivation and local sporting infrastructure need. These areas have some of the highest levels of deprivation and inactivity, which have reduced opportunities for local people.
On top of this, £85 million is being delivered this year through the Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme, with 50% of investment going to the 30% most deprived areas in the UK to support increased participation levels across the country. Successful Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme projects will be added to the list at gov.uk periodically.
In addition, the Government previously announced £5 million will be invested in basketball and basketball-led multisport facilities this year, as well as at least £2.5 million to deliver covered courts for tennis, padel and other activities. The locations of these investments will be announced in due course.

The Government is committed to ensuring that as many women and girls as possible have access to and benefit from quality sport and physical activity opportunities, including cricket.
Through Sport England, our Arm’s Length Body for grassroots sport, we provide investment of £13.4 million to the England and Wales Cricket Board between 2022-2029 to support grassroots participation, including for both women and girls.
In addition, in 2026/27, the Government has committed £3 million delivered through the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for five multi-sport covered cricket domes in Birmingham, Bolton, Derby, Newcastle, and Nottingham. All five domes will place an emphasis on continuing the surge in female participation that has been seen in recent years, as well as improving access for other under-represented groups. This funding builds on £1.5 million provided to the ECB last year for two domes in Luton and Farington, Lancashire, the latter of which forms part of a North West Centre of Excellence for the women's game.
Last week, I was delighted to visit the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup launch, celebrating a key moment in the decade of women’s sport. England and Wales are hosting the tournament from 12 June - 5 July 2026. The tournament is taking place in iconic grounds across London (Lord’s, The Oval), Birmingham (Edgbaston), Manchester (Old Trafford), Leeds (Headingley), Bristol (Bristol County Ground), and Southampton (Hampshire Bowl). The Government is committed to making sure that women and girls have clear routes to see elite female athletes compete at the highest level. This is key to inspiring and engaging fans and players now and into the future.
