To ask His Majesty's Government why they have not imposed sanctions on trade with Northern Cyprus.
The Government has not imposed sanctions on trade with northern Cyprus because the UK's approach is governed by longstanding obligations under relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and court rulings concerning the status of the northern part of Cyprus. In accordance with the rest of the international community, with the sole exception of Turkey, the UK does not recognise it as an independent state and we have no plans to introduce additional trade sanctions. We remain committed to supporting a just and lasting Settlement on the island and to encouraging economic engagement between the two communities within the framework of international law.

We are concerned about the pollution risk at the Akrotiri Salt Lake, which is designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. We are closely monitoring the situation and working with the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and local authorities to take effective action to mitigate risks to the lake's ecosystem.

We take the security of our people, bases and interests extremely seriously. RAF Akrotiri is protected by robust, multi-layered security measures, which we keep under constant review. For reasons of operational security, we do not comment on the details of these measures.

The UK has announced four rounds of sanctions since February 2024 against individuals and groups responsible for the violent expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, and against others responsible for inciting that violence. In each case, this has been done as a direct response to specific violent acts committed by the individuals and groups in question, or repeated incitement of violence against Palestinian civilians.
We are not aware of any allegations of an equivalent nature against individuals and groups in the north of Cyprus, but the UK will continue to take decisions on sanctions designations on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with the relevant legal framework and statutory requirements.

The UK is fully committed to supporting security on the island of Cyprus, including for all those resident within the Sovereign Base Areas. The UK deployed additional military capabilities to the region, in January and February, to defend our interests and support the defence and security of Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean and our defence personnel have worked together closely in our mutual interests and deployed further assets following the start of the conflict in the Gulf. The Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, and Defence Secretary all engaged extensively with their Cypriot counterparts during this time, and I have spoken numerous times to Foreign Minister Kombos, most recently this week, I have assured him of our continuing support for the security and safety of all the people of Cyprus.

Under the terms of the 2022 UK‑Cyprus Memorandum of Understanding, we will keep working to strengthen cooperation between our countries across trade and investment, defence and security, and education and research.
