To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps her Department is taking to help pupils develop the skills to identify online misinformation and disinformation.
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps her Department is taking to help pupils develop the skills to identify online misinformation and disinformation.
Media literacy is currently covered across the citizenship, relationships, sex and health education (RSHE), English and computing curricula. Pupils are taught to think critically about information, distinguish fact from opinion, evaluate evidence and use technology safely, responsibly and critically.
The updated statutory RSHE guidance, mandatory since 1 September 2026, strengthens learning about the online world. In secondary education, this includes critical thinking in relation to emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and AI chatbots, deepfakes, misinformation and disinformation.
The government is also taking forward Curriculum and Assessment Review recommendations to strengthen media and digital literacy in the refreshed curriculum. We expect to consult publicly on the revised programmes of study later this year.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what metrics will be used to assess whether its Media Literacy Action Plan is improving children and young people’s ability to recognise misinformation and AI-generated content.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what metrics will be used to assess whether its Media Literacy Action Plan is improving children and young people’s ability to recognise misinformation and AI-generated content.
Through the Media Literacy Action Plan, government is helping children and young people recognise misinformation and AI-generated content. We will work with Ofcom to monitor progress through annual research on children’s media use, attitudes, and ability to identify false content, alongside its Evaluation Toolkit for relevant programmes. We will also share information across government to track progress against departmental commitments.

Ministers and officials regularly engage with social media companies on child online safety issues including harmful and misleading content. Ofcom also works with platforms to promote media literacy and help users critically assess online content.
Alongside engagement, the Online Safety Act requires platforms to tackle mis/disinformation where it is illegal or harmful to children. Services likely to be accessed by children must provide extra protections. Ofcom has strong enforcement powers for platforms failing to meet their duties.

I have no Jewish schools in my constituency of Surrey Heath, nor any formally constituted places of Jewish worship, but I do have a proud and active Jewish community and am also the father of two children. As the father of two teenagers, I am deeply concerned about their exposure...

That is an excellent question and it raises a very good point. The hon. Gentleman talks about being a father. As a mother, I too have had to have these conversations at home and it is important that we do. That was in part why I wanted to be absolutely...

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what steps are being taken to protect public service broadcasters and media channels from state-backed disinformation campaigns.
It is essential that the public has access to accurate and trustworthy information from public service broadcasters. The Government is resolute in taking steps to combat interference targeting the UK and its sectors from any actor.

The Government is committed to encouraging broader and more inclusive participation in our democracy, particularly among young people. Through the £2.5 million Democratic Engagement Fund, we are supporting politically neutral, place-based projects that help people understand, engage with and participate in democracy, while building evidence of what works to increase democratic participation.
Democratic engagement helps young people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to understand democratic processes.
Furthermore, enabling young people to vote from the age of 16 will create transformative links between education and democracy. We are working closely with the Department for Education on reforms to the curriculum and assessment system, including strengthening democracy education and complementary media literacy skills.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how law enforcement agencies are being equipped to tackle AI-generated deepfakes and automated cybercrime operations.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how law enforcement agencies are being equipped to tackle AI-generated deepfakes and automated cybercrime operations.
I can assure that the government takes AI enabled crime and cybercrime very seriously and will continue to take the necessary steps to protect the public and support victims.
The Home Office has established the Police AI Threat Hub (PATH), as part of PoliceAI, to help build a consistent national response across local policing to the criminal misuse of AI.
PATH brings together expertise from across policing and partner organisations to develop and share good practice, and strengthen the response to emerging threats, including AI-generated deepfakes.
Through the Crime and Policing Act 2026, the Government banned the making and supply of deepfake intimate image generators, often known as nudification apps.
To tackle cybercrime the Home Office works with our partners across Government and law enforcement, including the National Crime Agency, National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Policing, to tackle all cyber threats. This includes Home Office funding for Regional Cyber Crime Units (RCCUs) across England and Wales, tasked with investigating and pursuing serious cyber offenders conducting crime committed in, or against, the UK. Since 2017, in partnership with local Police and Crime Commissioners, the Home Office has also directly funded a national network of local specialist officers trained to investigate cybercrime and support local communities in efforts to prevent crimes that occur online.

My Lords, at the weekend the noble Lord, Ricketts, warned of the threats posed by hybrid attacks on our national infrastructure. The threats are growing and becoming more dangerous. They threaten our very system of government and the values that underpin it.
We are vulnerable because of the spread of disinformation...

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord, Lord Norton, and I agreed with every word he said. I thank him for referring to the 2018 Select Committee on which I served. In the very short time available, I will make just three points. First, it is excellent that the officials...

My Lords, I strongly agree with my noble friend Lord Norton of Louth that citizenship education should extend deeply into other bodies engaged in civil society. As we know, all politics is basically local politics, and as a very long-standing local resident in the City of Westminster I am glad...

My Lords, the upcoming national curriculum reforms, making citizenship compulsory in primary schools and deepening focus on democracy and media literacy in secondary schools, are an excellent step forward. However, you can teach the mechanics of a democratic system, but you cannot put in a syllabus the courage it takes...

My Lords, our 16 and 17 year-olds are to be given the vote and there are around 1.5 million of them. This is at a time when our politics have never been so febrile and unpredictable. There is therefore a burning question as to whether our young people are equipped...
