Education is a devolved matter. It is therefore the responsibility of the Education Minister to work with relevant bodies to ensure that all pupils in Northern Ireland are able to receive high quality education which is sufficiently wide-ranging to prepare them for the future.

The Department for Business and Trade welcomes the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations but has no wider plans to commemorate this.

Qualifications in economics are available for schools to offer at GCSE and A level. Schools are free to decide which qualifications they will offer in each subject they teach. As part of their duty to teach a broad and balanced curriculum, schools are expected to offer a range of subject options to help meet the aspirations of all pupils.
The government has established an independent Curriculum and Assessment Review, covering ages 5 to 18, chaired by Professor Becky Francis CBE. It will seek to refresh the curriculum to ensure it is cutting edge, fit for purpose and meeting the needs of children and young people to support their future life and work.

The Minister is absolutely right to suggest that good financial education helps people to avoid debts and poverty, and to build up a savings cushion for a rainy day. Prevention is undoubtedly better than cure,
yet while statutory guidance ensures that students learn about threats such as drugs or unplanned pregnancy, money and finance are more optional. Should they not be taken as seriously as everything else?

There is relevant content in different parts of the curriculum, not only in mathematics, which is statutory throughout key stages 1 to 4, but at secondary level in citizenship. Further elements such as computing are particularly relevant to online fraud. In relationships, sex and health education, some aspects of fraud are covered, as is gambling, but I absolutely agree that it is important to keep these things under review.

Since the 2020 Budget £11 million has been awarded, across 50 successful bids. The Office for National Statistics received the most funding with just under £5 million all told. The Bank of England received £1.3 million, HM Treasury £1 million, DHLUC £1 million, and £2.5 million across other departments. Each project aims to create, acquire or use data to further the government’s economic objectives.

HE providers are independent, autonomous institutions, responsible for their own decisions on staffing issues, including how they structure themselves to deliver research and teaching priorities. Where it is necessary to reshape their activities, it is important that universities carefully consider the impact of job losses on staff and students and the overall sustainability of teaching and research.
The department’s access and participation reforms announced in November 2021 are playing a key role in ensuring individuals can get the support they need to make decisions that are right for them, regardless of their age, ethnicity, geographical region or socio-economic background.
The government has issued guidance to the Office for Student asking it to refocus the entire access and participation regime to create a system that supports people from disadvantaged backgrounds by ensuring students are able to make the right choices, accessing and succeeding on high quality courses which are valued by employers and lead to good graduate employment. This work aims to drive up standards in education and focus in on genuine social justice.

HM Treasury is the government’s economic and finance ministry, maintaining control over public spending, setting the direction of the UK’s economic policy and working to achieve strong and sustainable economic growth.
HMT takes a flexible and dynamic approach to resourcing in order to meet this objective. As a result, there are a number of officials, across groups, working on macroeconomic policy and planning and total numbers of staff fluctuate within and across years.
