Eighty-three proud pottery workers woke up on Monday morning with no job, following the collapse of the 200-year-old Royal Stafford pottery firm. It is a crisis in our ceramics industry, with escalating prices for energy, and fake and foreign imports causing a real problem. Will the Prime Minister, through his offices, arrange for the energy companies to meet Ceramics UK and the GMB, as the voice of the workforce, so that we can hammer out a new deal? Will he promote, through public procurement, buying British so that proud manufacturing jobs in Stoke can be protected?

As Ministry of Defence (MOD) procurement contracts are overwhelmingly with primes and SMEs, direct responsibility for employment relations in the defence industrial sector typically sits with private employers. In respect of the MOD workforce, I recently held a ‘Town Hall’ meeting at DE&S in Abbeywood to discuss psychological safety and other matters relating to the workplace, and will continue to engage with the full spectrum of partners from industry, and within the Defence Enterprise.

My Rt Hon Friend the Secretary of State mis-spoke during Transport Questions. What he meant to say was that the plan that Labour is proposing - to stop people from flying, or to allow them to go on holiday only once every five years, and to prevent them from using their cars - is opposed by the GMB union, who usually support them.

It would not be appropriate to comment on individual discussions. The Department for Transport has kept an open dialogue with Unions representing the aviation sector including GMB, through regular structured engagement at both Ministerial and official levels.
Additionally, Unions are represented in the membership of the Expert Steering Group, the industry working group for the International Aviation Taskforce. Our transport systems are critical to support the restart of the wider economy, we continue to work closely with the aviation sector and those that support it, directly and through the work of the Taskforce, on these restart plans and the longer-term recovery of the sector.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, what steps his Department has taken to ensure that GMB is able to negotiate on behalf of 200 workers at the Lidl warehouse in Bridgend.
The Government has put in place a robust legal framework to ensure workers can be represented by unions if that is their clear, democratic choice. The Government cannot get involved in individual cases such as this one. However, the law states that for a trade union to have the right to negotiate collectively and for its workplace representatives to be eligible for time off to carry out union duties, the union must be recognised by the employer.
Statutory recognition (achieved through the Central Arbitration Committee – CAC) requires that a majority of the workforce support union recognition for collective bargaining with the employer.

The Home Office has received letters from Mr Rix and intends to respond in due course. It is a decision for businesses whether to outsource certain functions. We have, however, responded to concerns that use of the Tier 2 (Intra-Company Transfer (ICT)) route may undercut or displace resident workers. On 24 March we announced that we will simplify and streamline the route in line with our international trade commitments to admit senior managers and specialists. From April 2017, all transferees (other than limited numbers of graduate trainees) will be required to qualify under a single visa category with a minimum salary of £41,500.
