The Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee is responsible for identifying, monitoring and taking action to remove or reduce systemic risks to the UK financial system. In the case of any disruption, the UK financial authorities have established mature coordination mechanisms to coordinate an appropriate response using the range of powers available to respond.
Alongside the UK financial regulators, HMT closely monitors markets conditions, as well as potential risks to UK financial stability.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps she takes to assess the resilience of the UK's international reserves to potential (a) geopolitical and (b) macroeconomic shocks.

The Exchange Equalisation Account (EEA) holds the UK government’s official reserves. HM Treasury appoints the Bank of England as its agent to carry out the day-to-day management of the reserves. The reserves are managed to ensure that the policy objectives, set out in the EEA Act 1979, can be met at all times. These objectives are:
- Checking undue fluctuations in the exchange value of sterling;
- Enabling government payments abroad; and
- Carrying out the UK’s obligations to the IMF
A total of £72 billion of additional financing was provided for the reserves between 2008-09 and 2019-20. The size of the UK's reserves stands broadly in line with other comparable economies. HM Treasury manages the liquidity, credit and market risk of the reserves to ensure that they meet the policy objectives of the EEA.
Seven years ago this week, on the orders of Putin in the Kremlin, my constituents faced the Novichok incident, which had an enormous impact on their lives for several months. In the end, Dawn Sturgess died. Please may we have a debate on the position of Russia in the world...

I thank the right hon. Member for that important reminder that, in this country, we have seen what a tyrant and a terror the Russian regime is on our soil. This is not some separate or foreign incident affecting only Ukraine; Russia has directly affected this country, with direct consequences...

The UK has a clear interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We consider the Taiwan issue one to be settled peacefully by the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait through constructive dialogue, without the threat or use of force or coercion. As the Foreign Secretary set out in his Mansion House speech, no country could shield itself from the economic repercussions should peace and stability fail in the Taiwan Strait. It's therefore essential that no party takes unilateral action to change the status quo.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the impact of the joint trilateral statement issued by the governments of China, Saudi Arabia and Iran, issued on 10 March, on geopolitics in the Middle East region.

The FCDO welcomes the agreement if it leads to a de-escalation of tension and a reduction of Iran's destabilising activity in the region. The long-term stability of the Gulf is important to everyone. The onus is on Iran to honour its commitment in the joint trilateral statement to respect the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.

The hon. Gentleman and I, perhaps surprisingly, share something in common, in that we would like to get the national debt under control. He will recognise that his party was in government for each of those years from 2010 when debt increased, year after year. The Opposition can come forward...

My hon. Friend is making an extremely powerful case. Does he agree that geography still matters when it comes to trade, and if we as a country choose to make our trading arrangements with our biggest trading partner, which is still the European Union, more difficult, more costly and more...

I think everybody recognises that that is completely right, and my right hon. Friend recognises that with both the European Union and the United States, the bulk of our trade exists in this bit of the planet in which we find ourselves. Trade with Asia is welcome, but it will...

China’s growing assertiveness on the international stage is rightly cause for concern, and the CPTPP is an example of where the Government need to be cautious. If China is successful in joining, it could block Taiwan’s application in the face of growing tensions between the two. Does the hon. Gentleman...

I have two examples that are relevant to intervention of the hon. Member for Rutherglen and Hamilton West (Margaret Ferrier), but I will give way one more time, for old times’ sake.
