That this House celebrates the launch of the inaugural West Dunbartonshire Schools Golf Championship at Dalmuir Golf Course, a landmark event that brought together 31 young people representing Clydebank High School, St. Peter the Apostle High School, Vale of Leven Academy, Dumbarton Academy, and Our Lady & St. Patrick’s High School; welcomes the establishment of this free-to-enter tournament as a powerful vehicle for breaking down historical barriers to golf, making the sport accessible to all local secondary pupils, and promoting physical health and community spirit; expresses its profound thanks to St. Peter the Apostle Maths teacher Mr. McKechnie for his exceptional work in initiating and organizing the event, whose efforts have laid the groundwork for a lasting local sporting legacy; acknowledges the individual achievements of the tournament winners, including Liam McGrogan, Anthony Scouller, Brodie Cairney, and Allan Ferguson; recognises the support provided by Dalmuir Golf Course and its community-focused approach to making golf more accessible; and looks forward to this championship growing as an annual tradition that will connect schools across West Dunbartonshire for years to come.

From 25 June to 1 September the Government is introducing a temporary reduced rate of VAT on children's menu meals and eligible family attractions.
The reduced rate applies to the supply of children’s meals from a children’s menu as part of catering services by a restaurant, café or similar establishment for consumption on the premises. This can include restaurants or cafés located within sports facilities such as golf clubs where the conditions are met. Individual businesses should consult HMRC guidance to determine how the rules apply in their circumstances.
The decision was taken to focus the VAT relief on activities especially aimed at children and families, keeping the package targeted and affordable. Sporting activities, including golf and adventure golf, do not fall within scope of the reduced rate. However, some supplies made by sports providers may already benefit from existing VAT reliefs or exemptions.

The Government is committed to ensuring that as many women and young people as possible have access to and benefit from quality sport and physical activity opportunities, including golf.
We provide the majority of support for grassroots sport through our Arm’s Length Body, Sport England, which annually invests over £250 million in Exchequer and Lottery funding. They provide long term investment of £10.2 million to England Golf between 2022-2029 to support grassroots participation, including for both women and young people.
England Golf run a campaign called Girls Golf Rock, which has enabled 5000 girls aged 7-14 to play golf over the last five years.
I was delighted to attend The Open Championships at Royal Portrush last year where the R&A hosted a number of programmes aimed at getting young people to play golf including free tickets for children under 16, the R&A swingzone with free lessons and their “Road to the Opens” programme.

The Government remains committed to delivering major international sporting events with pride - building upon the UK’s global reputation for excellence in event delivery - and seeking new opportunities to do so. We prioritise support for events based on a range of criteria, which includes how far they help create social and economic benefits for the UK and contribute towards the Government's Plan for Change.
We recognise that major events deliver significant benefits to all parts of the UK including Northern Ireland. Having attended The Open at Royal Portrush this July, I am aware that Northern Ireland is well equipped to successfully deliver major golfing events.
We continue to work closely with our expert arm’s-length body UK Sport to explore future hosting opportunities that will strengthen the UK’s major events pipeline. The UK has already secured a strong pipeline of events over the coming years, including the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, the Grand Départ for the Tour De France and the Tour de France Femmes in 2027 and the UEFA 2028 European Championships.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what steps he is taking with the (a) Northern Ireland Executive and (b) Royal Portrush Golf Club to help create a lasting (i) sporting and (ii) economic legacy following the Open Golf Championship in July 2025.
Royal Portrush will stage the 153rd Open Golf Championship next month, providing another outstanding showcase for golf in Northern Ireland. The 148th Open, held at Royal Portrush nine years ago, became the biggest sporting event ever held in Northern Ireland, delivering a combined economic and media benefit of more than £100 million to the region.
I visited Royal Portrush Golf Club in April which was an excellent opportunity to learn more about their preparations which are well underway. I would encourage the Right Honourable Member to share any suggestions he has to help create a lasting sporting and economic legacy from the Open with the Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland, and the Department for Business and Trade.
Economic growth is the number one priority of the Government. That is why we are working closely with the Northern Ireland Executive to create a thriving, competitive and regionally balanced economy in Northern Ireland through increased investment, job creation, and higher living standards.

Travel requirements can differ for British golfers and other professional sportspeople across Europe. For instance, as UK nationals, British golfers are able to travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for short-term visits (up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period) to compete in events.
Professional golfers undertaking paid work in any country they are visiting should check the entry requirements and rules for that country, in case they need to apply for a visa, work permit, or provide other documentation.

Promoting investment into Northern Ireland is a key priority for investment staff across the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Office for Investment, including the dedicated team of 10 based in Belfast (DBT NI). At present no dedicated member of staff is working specifically on The Open Golf Championship at Royal Portrush in July 2025, but staff are working on wider promotion of investment into Northern Ireland on an ongoing basis that seeks to take advantage of the focus that events like The Open can provide. DBT NI continues to work collaboratively with Invest Northern Ireland on a range of events and initiatives throughout the year.
