Decisions on student loan repayment arrangements must be considered alongside wider fiscal priorities, the long-term sustainability of the higher education (HE) funding system and value for money for taxpayers. The department has already taken decisive action against inflationary pressures by capping the maximum interest rates on Plan 2 and Plan 3 loans at 6% for the 2026/27 academic year, protecting borrowers from inflation shocks.
The Office for National Statistics has confirmed that it will bring the methods and data sources used to calculate the Consumer Prices Index, including owner occupiers' housing costs, into the Retail Prices Index from February 2030. The government will continue to consider the appropriate treatment of inflation measures within the student finance system as part of its ongoing consideration of HE funding and student support arrangements.

The Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper sets out our vision for a skills system that meets the needs of students and employers.
Graduate outcomes remain strong, with graduates more likely to be in employment, work in highly skilled occupations and earn more over their lifetimes than non-graduates. However, higher education is not the right route for everyone. We want all learners to be supported to make informed choices about the pathway that is right for them, whether that is a university degree, an apprenticeship, technical education or another route.
Through the Jobs and Careers Service and wider careers reforms, we are helping people access high-quality information, advice and guidance so they can make those decisions with a clear understanding of the opportunities available.
Demand for higher-level skills is expected to continue growing, with around two-thirds of additional employment demand in priority sectors by 2030 expected to come from roles requiring Level 4 qualifications and above. Universities have a central role to play in meeting that need and ensuring that graduates are equipped for the jobs of the future.

The department publishes earnings data for graduates across all subjects at Common Aggregated Hierarchy Level 2 (CAH2) subject level for one, three and five years after graduation in the Graduate Labour Market Outcomes (LEO) statistics.

Although Higher Education (HE) providers are autonomous of government, the department recognises that student choice requires access to high-quality and graduate outcome information. The department continues to work with the Office for Students (OfS), UCAS and sector partners to improve the quality, accessibility and visibility of graduate outcome information, as set out in the Post-16 Skills White Paper.
Discover Uni, operated by the UK HE funding and regulatory bodies, provides comprehensive courses, student and graduate outcomes, and earnings information via Graduate Outcomes and Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) Data. LEO provides a unique data source rarely available internationally linking education, employment, earnings or benefits records, valuable evidence on educational pathways and labour market outcomes supporting the focus on aligning education pathways with priority occupations and addressing skills shortages.

Decisions on local recruitment and employment are a matter for individual National Health Service trusts, to ensure they have the right number of staff in place, with the right skill mix, to deliver safe and effective care, and the specific information requested by the Hon Member is not centrally collated by the Department.
However, on the broader point he raises, we know that student paramedics work incredibly hard to gain the skills needed to save lives and we want those who qualify to be able to care for patients as soon as possible.

The Adzuna report provides one indicator of conditions in the market for advertised graduate roles. The department considers that evidence from a range of sources should be used to establish the full picture of graduate outcomes and the wider labour market.
Updated research from the Institute of Fiscal Studies and the 2026 Longitudinal Education Outcomes data shows that higher education continues to offer good value for money for most students, with graduates expected to be on average around £100,000 better off over their lifetime than someone who does not go to university. It also shows that rates of individuals in sustained employment, further study, or both remain consistently higher amongst graduates than amongst those with no higher level qualification, across all combinations of subject area, gender and prior GCSE attainment.
