The UK regularly raises concerns with the authorities in Guinea over human rights, democracy, freedom of expression, and the rule of law, including arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on political freedoms, civil society and peaceful protest.
Since the December 2025 elections, our Ambassador has pressed the Guinean authorities, including security officials, to ensure due process, and release detainees being held without charge. The UK is also continuing to support efforts to strengthen good governance and access to justice.

The UK is committed to supporting efforts to promote and protect human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Guinea. We raise human rights issues of concern with the Guinean authorities and provide programme support to local partners, particularly on the rights of women and girls.
The UK is clear about the importance of a return to constitutional order, maintaining good governance and ensuring the rule of law in Guinea. The Minister for Africa discussed this recently with Guinea's Minister for Planning and International Cooperation. We will continue to urge the Government of Guinea to guarantee the rights of all people in Guinea in accordance with its constitution and international standards.

We condemn the use of violence against protesters in Guinea. In March, I met with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Vice President to discuss ECOWAS' work to protect and promote democracy in West Africa, including in Guinea. We continue to call for all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue to ease tensions and prevent any further violence. We also encourage the transitional government to allow peaceful protest and welcome enquiries into abuses. Following the 5 September 2021 coup, the UK encourages all parties to work towards a peaceful transition, through credible, inclusive and transparent elections, as quickly as possible.

We are concerned by the deteriorating situation across West Africa and the Sahel, and the impact on regional security. Alongside the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, and international partners we condemned the coups in Burkina Faso (January 2022) and Guinea (September 2021). We support the urgent call made by the UN Secretary-General on 2 May for a swift return to democratic, civilian and constitutional rule without delay. In meetings with ECOWAS' President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou in February, and with Vice President Finda Koroma in March, I [Minister Ford] set out the UK's continued support for ECOWAS' mediation efforts.

The UK Government has repeatedly supported calls for those responsible for the 2009 Conakry stadium massacre to be brought to justice. We maintain sanctions against five individuals accused of involvement in the stadium massacre. We welcome the work of The Global Survivors Fund and its Guinean partners in designing a reparation project to provide survivors with psychological, medical and financial support. We continue to monitor the situation and engage with international and regional partners, including through our Embassy in Conakry.

The UK stands with LGBT+ individuals globally to affirm our commitment to the principle of non-discrimination on all grounds, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We work through our Embassy in Conakry, as well as international organisations, to promote non-discrimination towards LGBT+ people in Guinea, and to address discriminatory laws. The UK encourages Guinea to oppose all forms of discrimination and uphold the obligations in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the principles of the African Charter.

We are working closely with partners to assess and mitigate the risks surrounding recent coups, and to support our overall objective of security and stability in the region. As I set out in my statement on 25 January 2022, the UK condemns the coup d'etat by military forces in Burkina Faso. We are working with partners to encourage a swift, peaceful and constructive resolution to events. Dialogue between all parties is required to tackle insecurity across Burkina Faso, and respond to the needs of the Burkinabe people.
On both Guinea and Mali we support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mediation efforts. We have condemned the removal by force of the President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, in a coup in September 2021, and we continue to call on the transitional authorities in Mali to prepare for elections without delay. The UK Government has joined the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and international partners to condemn the removal by force of the President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, in a coup that was led by Colonel Doumbouya on 5 September 2021.
We continue to call for all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue to ease tensions, prevent any further violence and uphold democratic principles, including the rule of law. The UK has expressed support for regional mediation efforts and remains aligned with ECOWAS efforts to restore stability in the region, including by calling for a peaceful democratic transition as soon as possible.
We continue to work with our international partners to address the implications of the coup and monitor the situation closely, including in my discussion with ECOWAS President Brou on 18 November 2021.
