The UK condemns all acts of violence targeting religious or ethnic minorities in Bangladesh. We continue to raise the importance of protecting minority communities with the Government of Bangladesh. On 4 October, the British High Commissioner raised this with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, including the importance of ensuring communities always feel safe, including during the Durga Puja festival. We encourage the Government of Bangladesh to ensure incidents of violence are investigated impartially and that those responsible are held to account.

The Government is committed to ensuring that Hindu communities, and all faith communities, are able to worship and gather in safety.
Hindu temples are eligible to apply to the Places of Worship Protective Security Scheme, which provides funded protective security measures for places of worship and associated faith community centres in England and Wales that are at risk of hate crime. The scheme supports successful applicants who demonstrate vulnerability to hate crime by providing funded security measures including CCTV, alarms, secure doors and windows, fencing, lighting and entry systems. The scheme opens on an annual basis and will be open again later this year.
The Government also provides Faith Security Training, a free security awareness training course available to all faith communities, including Hindu communities, across England and Wales. It is designed to help faith communities strengthen security knowledge, improve preparedness and reduce the risk and impact of hate crime and other serious incidents at their places of worship. The training includes both multi-faith content and faith-specific modules, including bespoke Hindu content.
Where Hindu temples or event organisers have specific concerns regarding events, they should continue to engage with local police and local authorities, who can provide advice and support on safety and security planning.

That this House commemorates Amrit and Saroj Lal, founders of the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir and Cultural Centre; notes that a memorial service was held for them in March 2026 following Amrit’s passing earlier this year and Saroj’s passing in 2020; understands that both Amrit and Saroj worked tirelessly throughout the 1980s to find and create a permanent home for Hindu worship and culture in Edinburgh; and further notes that following years of work they founded the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir on 13th November 1993 on St Andrews Place which has gone from strength to strength since.

All forms of hate crime are completely unacceptable and have no place in our communities, including that directed at Hindus.
This government is committed to protecting the right of individuals to freely practise their religion and we will not tolerate anti-Hindu hatred in any form. We recently announced that the Places of Worship Protective Security Scheme, which is accessible for all non-Jewish and Muslim places of worship, will receive an uplift of £1.5 million. This will bring the total available to protect Hindu places of worship and facilities, as well as Christian, Sikh and other faith sites to a record £5 million.
The government also provides funding for True Vision – the police hate crime programme and online reporting portal – to encourage communities to report hate crime and reinforce relationships between communities and policing and allow victims of hate to report hate crimes to the police without visiting a police station of call the police.
On Monday 9 March 2026, we published our Protecting What Matters plan which details the specific action being taken by government to tackle religious hatred across the country. This can be found on gov.uk here.

The UK engages with the Government of Pakistan on the rights of religious minorities, including the treatment of Christian and Hindu prisoners, at Ministerial and official levels as appropriate. We do not comment on private diplomatic exchanges, but this engagement complements Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office work to strengthen the rule of law, prison oversight and minority protections, including through our High Commission's partnerships with civil society. We will continue to raise these concerns where appropriate and press for improved safeguards.

The UK condemns all acts of violence targeting religious or ethnic minorities and we have made clear the importance of protecting freedom of religious belief to key stakeholders in Bangladesh.
When I met PM Rahman in February, I discussed the importance of inclusion and protecting minorities, including Hindus, in line with the commitments he made in his victory address to safeguard the rights of all Bangladeshis. In February 2025, the UK's Human Rights Ambassador, Eleanor Sanders, visited Bangladesh and held meetings with the Interim Government to discuss issues of justice, accountability, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
Our commitment to Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) is reflected in our £27 million Bangladesh Collaborative, Accountable and Peaceful Politics programme (2023-2028), which aims to protect civic space, foster inclusive dialogue, and address tensions that can lead to violence.

All UK official development assistance (ODA) funded programmes operate under the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office's Programme Operating Framework, which requires robust controls, mandatory oversight, and compliance with cross‑government project delivery standards, alongside strengthened safeguarding due‑diligence measures and transparency obligations to ensure accountable, safe, and effective use of public funds.
