We strongly condemn all instances of hate and violence against the Ahmadiyya community. The UK remains committed to championing freedom of religion or belief for all. Last year, we launched the UK's Freedom of Religion or Belief Strategy. The UK, including Embassy officials, engages with religious minority communities, including Ahmadiyya, in Indonesia. The UK regularly raises concern around instances of violence against minority religious groups with Indonesian Government officials, most recently in September 2026. The UK's Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders raised the restrictions facing Ahmadiyya during her visit to Jakarta in 2025. Through programming, the UK has supported training in Indonesia on inter-faith mediation for community leaders and on understanding legal rights for religious minority communities.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to page 85 of his department's Strategic Defence Review, published 2 June 2025, what progress has been made on the Defence Roadmap and a wider comprehensive bilateral partnership with Indonesia.

The Government continues to make progress on its defence relationship with Indonesia. In November 2025, the UK and Indonesia agreed a landmark £4 billion Maritime Partnership Programme securing 1,000 jobs in the UK and demonstrating our shared commitment to stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, upholding freedom of navigation and supporting a rules-based international order. In January 2026, the UK and Indonesia committed to forging a new, deeper Strategic Partnership which includes cooperation on defence.
To ask His Majesty's Government whether any International Climate Finance projects in Indonesia will receive loans instead of grants; and, if so, which projects, and what the terms of the loans will be.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) uses a combination of grants and other instruments, including loans, as most appropriate to deliver the intended outcomes and provide the best value for money. No existing FCDO International Climate Finance programmes have been switched from grants to loans linked with the recent announcement of £2 bus fares.

The UK has met and exceeded the International Climate Finance 3 (ICF 3) nature (£3 billion) sub-target. We will confirm final figures for ICF 3 and sub-targets once our accounts are finalised and audited in line with usual practice for official Government spending data. Individual programme-level spend data will be available on DevTracker in due course.
The UK remains committed to protecting, restoring and sustainably managing tropical forests, and recognises the crucial role they place in mitigating against climate change, preserving biodiversity and supporting livelihoods. Across the Amazon, Congo and Indonesia forest basins, UK ICF programme support is helping countries strengthen forest governance, protecting Indigenous and community land rights, improving forest monitoring, tackling illegal activities driving deforestation, and developing more sustainable land-use and livelihood opportunities.

I beg to move,
That this House has considered UK-Indonesia collaboration on environmental sustainability.
It is a pleasure to see you in the Chair, Sir Jeremy. I am also pleased to see the Minister for the Indo-Pacific in her place; I did want this to be an Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office...

I thank the hon. Member for bringing forward this important debate. As she is setting out, peatlands store more carbon than all the world’s forests combined, whether that be on the Somerset levels in my constituency or in the rainforests of Borneo, and their destruction accelerates the climate crisis. Does...

I certainly think that peatlands are incredibly important. It has been one of my frustrations that we put so much emphasis on forests, and on the UK on planting trees—like a race to how many millions of trees each party can pledge to plant—whereas, as the hon. Member says, the...

My hon. Friend is talking about peatlands; she will know that Indonesia had a huge, deep burn of its peatlands in 2019, with 31,000 sq km of land burned. In the UK, when we had a terrible peatland fire on Saddleworth moor in 2018, just the year before, an estimated...

I very much agree. We both spent the Easter recess wading through peatlands. I was going to say that we were wading up to our knees; I was wading up to my knees, but for everyone else there the peat came up to about mid-calf on them. I had very...

I commend the hon. Lady for rightly securing this debate. She has given us some of the problems and, in her intervention, the hon. Member for Glastonbury and Somerton (Sarah Dyke) suggested some of the things that could happen to solve them.

I direct the hon. Gentleman to the Minister, because she is the one with the power to put him in touch with the embassy, for example.
However, I know exactly what the hon. Gentleman is saying. I was at the desertification COP in Riyadh in December 2024, which was all about...

If Members have not had the chance to go to it already, I will just let them know that the British Red Cross is holding an event in a dining room A or B today. Earlier, I was talking to a young lady who is doing some work in Nepal...

My hon. Friend will recognise that where there is such degradation, huge amounts of biodiversity are lost. Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, and I am grateful to the Indonesian Government for the work that they have been focused on in this regard.

I absolutely agree. I have just come from an event that Fairtrade is hosting in the Inter-Parliamentary Union room, at which people were talking, among other things, about the forest risk commodities legislation—I will come on to that later, because the Government have announced regulations today—and about the cost to...
