Public petition from residents of Killamarsh Derbyshire against the siting of the Sarp UK plant near populated areas and for steps to ameliorate the nuisance so caused. (Circulated with the Vote for 30 July 1998).
That this House is deeply concerned about two incidents involving the escape of dangerous clouds of sulphuric and nitric acid from the Sarp (UK) plant at Killamarsh, Derbyshire; notes that the plant is situated next to a popular park, other industrial units, two schools and centres of population and that consideration was given to moving thousands of people out of Killamarsh during the first incident, whilst the second incident occurred too quickly for any such contingency to be considered; calls as a minimum for an off-site safety plan, a moratorium on processes operating on the site to allow for a proper Health and Safety Executive audit of the plant, the publication of the full HSE reports and findings, a further investigation of the gases and smells in the area and the establishment of a one-stop shop for complaints; and welcomes the interest taken by the Minister for the Environment in the incidents whilst hoping that this will lead to a situation where the people of Killamarsh and the surrounding areas can be assured of living in a safe and healthy environment.
