The model of Logica tablet purchased by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was the HP EliteBook 2760p Tablet PC. The dimensions of this device are 3.2 cm high x 29.0 cm wide x 21.2 cm deep and the weight of the device is 1.79 kg.

The feedback received from the majority of users has been positive and the tablets are now routinely used for the presentation of cases in court. In particular users have welcomed the fact that they no longer have to transport heavy files to court and also that they can download information at the courts or at home, enabling much more flexible working. Some users have provided the feedback that the device can be heavy to hold for long periods of time; that the battery life could be longer and that attaching the device to a mains power supply can restrict the user's ability to move around when presenting. The Department has sought to address these issues by providing additional equipment where possible for example, additional battery packs and adjustable lecterns to be used in court.

The Logica tablets used by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) were not originally equipped with DVD players. Stand-alone DVD players are provided when required for operational reasons.

The Logica tablets will become the property of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at the end of the contract (March 2015). There is a notional asset transfer charge of £0.01p. There is no automatic upgrade of the tablets included in the purchase price.

The tablets, and their use in court, are a key component of the Department's digital strategy. They remove the need to print and then transport large case files for advocates in court, delivering both efficiency and cost savings.

As an integral part of the department's Transforming Through Technology programme the Crown Prosecution Service decided in principle to procure tablet style devices for use by advocates in court in June 2011 when standard laptops were assessed as not fit for purpose for in-court presentation of digital cases. The decision to procure the model “HP Elitebook 2760p” from Logica was made in November 2011.

IT services as a managed service. The contract encompasses the supply of infrastructure as well as desk top and mobile IT equipment. The original contract included a provision to extend for up to five years.

In 2008-09 the ICT Services ‘Beyond 2012 Project’ was established to evaluate and set out the financial and non-financial evaluation of the procurement options, and followed a rigorous CPS internal governance review and approval process.

In 2009 the CPS board approved the business case and decision to extend the IT managed service contract from 2009 to 2015 based on a full appraisal and assessment of the procurement options available, including alternative providers.

The option to extend the CGI contract until 31 March 2015 was approved on the basis it was most closely aligned to the delivery of the Department's strategic objectives, and delivered substantial savings between 2012 and 2015 that were unlikely to be achieved from a re-procurement while presenting the lowest risk to business critical service continuity.

The provision of mobile IT equipment and associated software, security maintenance and support was an integral part of the PFI offer.

Cost of laptop service

a general fixed charge and is not separately distinguishable. The costs represent the variable balance charged for the remaining number and include the associated software, accessories and maintenance.
