To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of any potential impacts of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement on farmers in Northern Ireland.
The EU-Mercosur trade agreement was signed on 17 January 2026 and provisionally entered into force on 1 May 2026, but has not yet been ratified, and is a matter for the EU. The EU-Mercosur deal does not apply in Northern Ireland. The Government will monitor any impacts of this deal on farmers across the UK; the Northern Ireland Executive has specific responsibility for farming policy in Northern Ireland.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what steps his Department is taking to negotiate a free trade agreement between the United Kingdom and Mercosur.

Mercosur countries are important partners for the UK. We are committed to strengthening our bilateral trading relationships to remove barriers to trade and help grow UK exports, which is why I visited Brazil soon after I took up post in 2025, where I signed agreements on customs, regulatory reform and export credit; and Argentina where I had meetings to further UK interests on whisky, financial services and air services. In addition, Uruguay has started its accession process to the CPTPP and Argentina has recently applied to join.
Any decision to seek to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement with Mercosur will be communicated to the House in line with my department’s standard approach.

I understand that the EU-Mercosur interim Trade Agreement will apply provisionally from May 2026, and we will monitor its effects on trade and our imports closely.
While Northern Ireland has access to the EU Single Market in agricultural goods alongside the UK internal market, it is UK trade agreements that Northern Ireland exporters benefit from. This includes farmers and those in the food and drink sector.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the impact of the EU–Mercosur trade agreement on UK farmers.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the impact of the EU–Mercosur trade agreement on UK farmers.
The EU-Mercosur trade agreement was signed on 17 January 2026, but has not yet been ratified, and is a matter for the EU. We do not expect that it will impact UK food production, supply or security.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of whether UK imports of agricultural products from Mercosur countries will increase following the EU–Mercosur trade agreement.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of whether UK imports of agricultural products from Mercosur countries will increase following the EU–Mercosur trade agreement.
The EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement liberalises trade between the EU and Mercosur. As such, we do not expect that there would be a direct impact on UK imports of agricultural products from the bloc.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, whether his Department has made an assessment of the potential impact of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercusor on (a) food producers and (b) farmers in Northern Ireland.

The department has not made an assessment of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercusor. The department continuously monitors agri-food markets through the UK Agriculture Market Monitoring Group.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, whether (a) she and (b) her predecessors have had discussions with their Mercosur counterparts on the status of gold in negotiations around a UK-Mercosur trade agreement.
The UK is not negotiating a Free Trade Agreement with the Mercosur bloc. Neither the Secretary of State nor her predecessors have discussed the status of gold within any possible future negotiation with their Mercosur counterparts.
Mercosur countries are important partners for the UK. We are working to strengthen our trading relationships in a way which supports sustainable development, removes barriers to trade, and helps British businesses to export.
To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, what discussions she (a) has had and (b) plans to have with relevant stakeholders on strengthening trade ties with the Mercosur countries.

Ministers and officials engage regularly with stakeholders to understand the opportunities and challenges to increasing trade and investment with the region, including at a Mercosur-focused roundtable discussion with businesses chaired by my Hon. Friend the Minister for International Trade last July, and on a visit to Uruguay in September. In November, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Secretary of State for International Trade discussed collaboration on trade and health with Argentina's Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero. On Tuesday, the Secretary of State spoke with her Brazilian counterpart Roberto Fendt to discuss opportunities to improve our trade. The Secretary of State and I look forward to further engagement around the next UK-Brazil JETCO later this year.
