To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to improve suicide prevention support in Cheshire and Merseyside.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to improve suicide prevention support in Cheshire and Merseyside.
Every death by suicide is a tragedy that has a devastating and lasting impact on families, friends, and communities. We are committed to delivering the Suicide Prevention Strategy for England, which aims to reduce suicide rates and address the risk factors contributing to suicide, as well as improving support for those who have self-harmed or are bereaved by suicide.
To strengthen access to suicide prevention support, anyone in England experiencing a mental health crisis can now to speak to a trained National Health Service professional at any time of the day through the mental health option on NHS 111. Work is also underway to ensure crisis support is available via text, to widen access for people who may find voice calls difficult.
We are also making £473 million of capital funding available over the next four years, which we encourage systems to invest in new care models such as community-based mental health centres and new mental health emergency departments, also known as crisis assessment centres.
In Cheshire and Merseyside, partners are taking forward a range of suicide prevention activity, supported by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and the Cheshire and Merseyside Public Health Collaborative. This includes work to strengthen crisis care services, improve access to mental health support in local communities, and develop coordinated prevention plans informed by local data and partnerships. In addition, the Local Government Association is undertaking a rapid review of suicide prevention arrangements across the sub-region to identify priorities for action, share good practice, and support a strengthened system-wide approach to preventing suicide.

NHS England now publishes trust-level corridor care data as part of its regular NHS Performance Statistics Publication. As this is a new dataset, it is currently designated as Statistics in Development while data quality and completeness continue to improve. The Department has not made a separate assessment of the prevalence of corridor care specifically across National Health Service trusts serving Merseyside beyond consideration of the published NHS England data.
NHS England provides targeted support to organisations experiencing the highest levels of corridor care. This includes expert Getting It Right First Time teams working with local NHS leaders to improve patient flow, strengthen discharge arrangements, and reduce overcrowding. Trusts serving Merseyside, like all NHS organisations, can access this support where appropriate.

The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) is built with robust security and privacy controls to ensure that access to National Health Service data is tightly governed and independently auditable.
The NHS FDP Information Governance Framework clearly lays out the roles and responsibilities relating to breach notification and management, defining organisations’ responsibilities in this area.
All user activity within the NHS FDP environment is logged for auditing purposes. These logs are monitored by both the suppliers platform team and the NHS Cyber Security Operations Centre to detect and respond to any malicious activity.
The NHS FDP contract includes audit provisions that allow NHS England to validate and confirm that contractual requirements are being met. These rights of audit are standard within NHS commercial agreements and provide assurance that the platform operates in accordance with NHS England’s expectations and legal obligations, including compliance with UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.
As a current member of the Panel of Chairs, may I say what a wonderful job you do in this Chamber, Mr Speaker? [Laughter.]

Serious Violence Reduction Orders (SVROs) were piloted for two years throughout Merseyside, Sussex, Thames Valley and West Midlands police force areas. The pilot took place between 19 April 2023 and 18 April 2025.
The final independent evaluation of the pilot will look to understand the effectiveness of SVROs in reducing reoffending and knife carrying. These insights will be critical in informing future decisions on whether the orders will be expanded or rolled out nationally.
