That this House recognises the brilliance of the Lionesses’ goalkeeper Mary Earps; notes that Nike chose not to produce a replica shirt for England’s keeper, which has been criticised as shameful, hurtful and devaluing the role that the keeper plays in women’s football; and calls on Nike to reverse this decision and to put on sale Earps’ replica goalkeeper shirt, so that girls who were inspired by the FIFA Women’s World Cup and who want to play in goal feel that their role is as important as that of an outfield player.

The Nike international conference held in Edinburgh on 26 and 27 February took place in accordance with scientific advice available at the time.
It was agreed by the four Chief Medical Officers ahead of the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 that each administration would announce their own cases and take their own decisions about what is appropriate to release, so this was a matter for the Scottish Government.
Public Health England (PHE) was alerted to a case associated with the Nike conference in Edinburgh on 2 March 2020.

Public Health England (PHE) did not have any contact with the Nike Factory Store Swindon.
PHE North East were contacted by the Head Office in Sunderland on 2 and 3 March 2020 to report illness amongst employees attending the Nike conference. The Head Office was referred to Health Protection Scotland as the lead organisation in the incident response.

Around 50 individuals who attended this conference lived in England and were identified. PHE followed up these individuals. They were sent text messages informing them of the exposure and asking them to self-isolate for 14 days and contact 111 if they develop symptoms.
PHE did not have direct contact with conference organisers in Edinburgh or Nike in Edinburgh. Health Protection Scotland had direct contact with the conference organisers as the lead organisation in the incident response.

For over 40 years, Jim Hall Sports has been at the heart of Bramhall village. However, the future of the shop is in doubt after Nike’s decision to terminate its supply agreements with smaller independent shops. This follows years of annual rises in the amounts that independent retailers have needed to sell to hold on to their merchandise account. It is a move that is a harbinger of the end of many independent stores in an already pressurised high street market. What discussions has my hon. Friend had with sports giants such as Nike to ensure that Jim Hall’s and other independent sports shops continue to have a future on our high streets?

If they think they are being unfairly treated, they could go to the Competition and Markets Authority. Contractual arrangements are between two private companies. However, we will support our high streets through the towns fund and the establishment of the high street taskforce.
