We are taking steps to improve our NHS through the development of a 10-year plan. One of the big shifts for this plan is transforming the NHS from analogue to digital.
NHS staff should have access to the right technology to enable them to do their job to the best of their ability. Technology moves on and older equipment such as fax machines and pagers must be replaced with tech that is fit for purpose. However, some pagers will remain as NHS trusts are allowed to keep some pagers for emergency situations, such as when Wi-Fi fails or when other forms of communication are unavailable.

The MOJ have provided 187 pagers to staff between May 2010 and December 2013 and the cost of providing such is £9,227 per annum.
NOMS require the use of pagers to maintain communications within Establishments, where other forms of communications are difficult due to the fabric of the buildings and other mobile devices are not permitted for security reasons.

MCA
Since May 2010 the MCA:
has purchased 550 Channel 00 pagers at a cost of £121,900. Channel 00 pagers cannot be rented and have to be purchased. The MCA use them in areas of poor communications, e.g. for some volunteer coastguards in remote areas, on a private VHF network that MCA maintain;
has rented 604 commercial pagers at £1.44 per pager, per month. The precise rental start dates cannot be easily identified and manually checking start dates for pagers would unfortunately incur disproportionate costs.

In May 2010, there were 3,497 pagers in use by Ministry of Defence staff at a cost of around £14,000 per month. In December 2013, there were 2,463 pagers in use at a cost of around £9.600 per month across Defence. The number of pagers in December 2013 is 1,034 fewer than in May 2010. Information on the number of pagers issued since May 2010 could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
