That this House notes with concern the decision by Wm Morrison Supermarkets Limited to close their outlet at Clerkhill, Peterhead, which results in the closure of the Post Office branch serving that area; understands that Wm Morrison Supermarkets Limited rejected a request to keep the outlet open for a short period to assist in a new base being found for the Post Office; condemns their decision to press ahead with the closure with effect from 30 July 2026 despite being well-supported at their three outlets in Peterhead by the local community over many years; and reaffirms its support for Post Office branches as central to the communities they serve.

Tory ideology has blocked onshore wind development in Scotland for years. The Peterhead carbon capture cluster has lost out on funding twice and is still only classed as a reserve. Pump storage hydro schemes
have been blocked because the UK Government will not discuss a pricing mechanism. If the Prime Minister actually cares about net zero and Scottish jobs, will he at least take action to advance Peterhead carbon capture and storage and pump storage hydro in Scotland?

Not only are we supporting in this country carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and offshore wind—all new technologies that will help us to get to net zero and will create jobs in Scotland—but we are supporting our transition. That is good for the Scottish economy and good for Scottish jobs, and something the SNP would do well to support.

The Government continues to view CCS as having a potential role in the long-term decarbonisation of the UK’s power and industrial sectors and we are engaging closely with the Peterhead developer and wider CCS industry. The Department has paid £28.5 million between 2011/12 and November 2015 on developing proposals for a new carbon capture and storage project at Peterhead. This included the investment in Front End Engineering and Design work to determine the cost and feasibility of the project, independent professional technical, legal, financial and commercial advice and civil service staff.
