That this House calls on the President of the Board of Trade to use all means within his power to ensure GEC utilise surpluses in the Plessey Pension Fund solely to the benefit of ex-members of the Fund who are either deferred pensioners, pensioners or transferees into the GEC scheme and that contractual benefits due to some ex-employees unilaterally withdrawn be reinstated.

That this House notes with concern the loss of 112 jobs at the Plessey Crypto factory in Wavertree, Liverpool, and a further 240 jobs at Bear Brand, Woolton, Liverpool; and, in the light of the profitability of the two parent companies involved, urges that these decisions be reconsidered, especially having regard to the existing 20 per cent levels of unacceptably high unemployment in the city; and calls on the Departments of Trade and Employment to intervene urgently in a last ditch attempt to save these jobs.

It is alleged that "bribes" and "backhanders" are going to local officials, land-owners, politicians, and certain members of the Malaysian Royal Family. I have been informed that Aid-Trade Provision funds have been offered for this project, but have not yet been released'; notes that the honourable Member has compiled a dossier of many reports and allegations inappropriate and environmentally damaging Aid-Trade Provision projects; notes that 36 per cent. of all Aid-Trade Provision grants since 1979, of ??276.603 million, has supported contracts with just five British companies: Northern Engineering Industries, BICC, General Electric Company, Plessey, and Trafalgar House; further notes that these companies have, since 1979, contributed approximately ??1,492,231 to the Conservative Party and other groups supporting the Conservative Party; strongly believes that public funds are being squandered and are harming, rather than helping, the poorest people overseas; and calls for an urgent and full investigation by the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee.
