To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what reports he has received on action taken by the Egyptian government against Reuters as a result of that company's reporting of the case of Giulio Regeni; and what representations he has made to that government on such reports.
We are concerned by reports that Reuters is under investigation in relation to an article published on 21 April about Giulio Regeni’s case, and are in contact with Reuters to establish the facts. We consider a free and independent media to be a vital element of a stable and democratic state. As well as calling on the Egyptian authorities to ensure a full and transparent investigation in full cooperation with the Italian authorities, we continue to call on the Egyptian government to ensure that the rule of law and rights enshrined in the Egyptian constitution are protected, so that journalists are able to operate freely without fear of persecution.
That this House notes that the cleaners employed by Initial Facilities, under contract from Thomson Reuters at its prominent Canary Wharf offices, are paid below the London Living Wage; expresses disappointment that Reuters, which has gained a reputation for objective journalism, should have cleaners contracted on its premises who are on wages beneath the London poverty line; urges Reuters to revise its contract to raise the wages of its cleaners to the rate recommended by the Greater London Authority as the London Living Wage of 8.30 per hour; expresses concern at reports that the contractor at Reuters has responded to the cleaners' request for the London Living Wage with unwarranted threats to dismiss them; and expects the cleaners to be treated with respect and dignity at work.

That this House notes the takeover of Reuters, the global financial and media organisation, by Thomson of Canada, which could result in the Thomson family holding as much as 53 per cent. of the organisation; further notes the multi-million pound windfall which chief executive Tom Glocer will receive; is concerned with the lack of transparency over the implications for staff resulting from the proposed merger in light of recent cutbacks and sub-inflationary wage rises for staff; believes the merger should be subject to the most rigorous scrutiny by all parties involved, including negotiation with the unions representing affected staff; therefore calls on both companies to honour terms and conditions of employment, to seek to avoid redundancies and to honour in full commitments to the Reuters Pension Fund, Reuters Retirement Plan, Thomson Financial pension scheme and other pension schemes; and further calls on the company to maintain the integrity and independence of news in line with Reuters Trust principles and the long-established editorial standards of Thomson Financial News.

That this House expresses great concern that Reuters TV has given notice of de-recognition to the Broadcasting Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union which represents a large proportion of the company's technical workforce; recognises that Reuters has a well deserved reputation as an organisation committed to freedom of information and free speech; is shocked to find that they are prepared to suppress the rights of their own employees to freedom of association and the freedom to join the trade union of their choice; and calls on Reuters to withdraw their de-recognition proposals.
