The 10 Year Workforce Plan will put the National Health Service workforce on a sustainable footing so it can deliver the service model set out in the 10-Year Health Plan.
As set out in the Plan for Change, we are committed to returning by March 2029 to the NHS constitutional standard that 92% of patients wait no longer than 18 weeks from referral to consultant-led treatment, and we expect integrated care boards to arrange services to meet both this target and interim targets set out in planning guidance.
In March 2026, 70.4% of patients referred on rheumatology pathways were waiting within 18 weeks, exceeding our overall aim of 65%. This is a significant improvement on March 2025, when 65.9% of patients were waiting within 18 weeks.

We set out in the 10-Year Health Plan for England that over the next three years we will create 1,000 new specialty training posts, with a focus on specialties where there is greatest need. We will set out next steps in due course.
This Government is committed to training the staff we need, including doctors, to ensure patients are cared for by the right professional, when and where they need it. We will publish a 10 Year Workforce Plan to set out action to create a workforce ready to deliver the transformed services set out in the 10-Year Health Plan.

The Royal College of General Practitioners has produced e-learning modules on a number of musculoskeletal (MSK) and rheumatic conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, and axial spondyloarthritis, which are designed to help general practitioners and other primary care professionals recognise the symptoms of these conditions.
Additionally, to support health and care professionals in the early diagnosis and management of different rheumatological conditions, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published expert guidance on rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and spondyloarthritis, with guidance for all three available, respectively, at the following three links:
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng100
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng226

The Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) Programme for Rheumatology has made recommendations on the diagnosis and management of a range of rheumatic and MSK disorders and will support the National Health Service to deliver care more equitably across the country and closer to patients’ homes, and to improve services nationally. The GIRFT National Speciality Report included a number of recommendations designed to help support patients with non-inflammatory MSK conditions to be cared for in primary and community settings, freeing up capacity for those who need it to have urgent referrals to outpatient rheumatology services.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps is his Department taking to ensure people with suspected autoimmune or inflammatory conditions are referred to rheumatology services within 3 weeks.

We are committed to supporting people with long-term conditions and ensuring they receive the support that they need, including referral to specialist services as appropriate.
To support health and care professionals in the early diagnosis and management of rheumatoid autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published expert guidance. This guidance states that people with suspected persistent synovitis, a condition closely associated with RA, should be assessed in a rheumatology service within three weeks of referral.
The Getting It Right First Time Programme for Rheumatology has published a report for healthcare professionals on the diagnosis and management of a range of rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders, including autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. The report includes several recommendations designed to help reduce the number of unnecessary hospital visits and reduce waiting times for outpatient rheumatology services, including guidance on best approach for establishing patient initiated follow up, and specialist advice.
More widely, the Elective Reform Plan recognises that the traditional delivery of outpatient care, via a hospital appointment with a specialist, can be resource intensive and is often not the right model for clinicians, patients, or their carers. Digital solutions, updated financial flows, appropriate job planning, and time and investment will lead to meaningful reform to outpatient services, including rheumatology services.
The 10-Year Health Plan sets out further our vision for elective care by 2035, where most interactions no longer take place in a hospital building, instead happening virtually or via neighbourhood services. Planned care will be more efficient, timely, and effective and will put control in the hands of patients, including those with suspected autoimmune or inflammatory conditions.
We are also committed to transforming and expanding diagnostic services and speeding up waiting times for tests. This includes investment in new and expanded community diagnostic centres, which is supporting a key Government priority to shift care from the hospital to the community, and offer the tests needed to support diagnosis of suspected rheumatoid autoimmune or inflammatory conditions such as RA.

The 10 Year Workforce Plan will ensure that the National Health Service has the right people in the right places, with the right skills to care for patients, when they need it. To support this, the Department and NHS England will be engaging with key stakeholders to ensure that the particular needs of different patient groups and relevant health professionals are reflected in this work.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, if he will take steps to increase the number of specialist rheumatology nurses in the workforce.

The training of nurses is the responsibility of the health care independent statutory regulatory body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). It has the general function of promoting high standards of education and coordinating all stages of education to ensure that nursing students and newly qualified nurses are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for professional practice.
The training curricula for postgraduate training for nurses to specialise as a specialist rheumatology nurse is set by the Royal College of Nursing, and has to meet the standards set by the NMC.
We will publish a new workforce plan to deliver the transformed health service we will build over the next decade, and to ensure the National Health Service has the right people, in the right places, with the right skills to deliver the care patients need when they need it.
That this House celebrates the achievement of Bedfordshire Rheumatology team who have been recognized as one of three trusts nationally who have actively reduced the diagnostic delay in Axial Spondyloarthritis (Axial SpA); understands the impact of Axial SpA as an inflammatory condition of the spine and joints, which works silently, leaving people in increasing pain and exhaustion; and supports the aims of the Act on Axial SpA campaign to reduce the current UK average time between first symptom to diagnosis from eight and a half years to one year.
