To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the support to jurors provided by Samaritans between 2022 and 2025.
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the support to jurors provided by Samaritans between 2022 and 2025.
Jury service is an important civic duty, and the Government is committed to ensuring jurors feel supported throughout their service. The Government did not undertake a specific assessment of the support provided to jurors by Samaritans between 2022 and 2025. During this period, jurors experiencing distress were signpost by HMCTS to Samaritans’, alongside support available through their GP.
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what assessment she has made of the potential implications for her policies of the Samaritan's media guidelines for reporting suicide; and if her Department will take steps to promote those guidelines.

The UK has a self-regulatory system for the press, which is independent from Government. This is vital to ensure the public has access to accurate and trustworthy information from a range of different sources. The Government therefore does not intervene in the work of the press or independent press regulators.
Within the self-regulatory system, the majority of traditional publishers are members of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO). Some publishers have joined the Independent Monitor for the Press (Impress), while others, including the Financial Times and the Guardian, have chosen to stay outside either regulator with their own detailed self-regulatory arrangements.
These regulators enforce codes of conduct which provide guidelines on a range of areas, which include reporting on suicides. Both regulators also signpost to the Samaritans’ media guidelines for reporting on suicides and publish further advice for journalists and editors relating to reporting on suicide. Impress’ guidance is https://www.impressorg.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Guidance-on-the-Impress-Standards-Code.pdf#page=65 and IPSO’s is https://www.ipso.co.uk/resources/reporting-suicide-guidance/.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how much funding the (a) Government, (b) Premier League and (c) Samaritans are providing for the Together Against Suicide Partnership.
Through the Men’s Health Strategy, we have established a partnership with the Premier League to tackle male suicide and improve health literacy. This supports the Premier League’s Together Against Suicide initiative with the Samaritans. The funding contributed towards the Together Against Suicide initiative is not within the Department’s remit.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what materials will be provided by the Government for the (a) the Premier League and (b) Samaritans in the Together Against Suicide Partnership.
As part of England's first ever Men's Health Strategy, the Government announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Premier League to tackle male suicide and improve health literacy. We will work with the Premier League to co-create materials that promote signposting to existing mental health and suicide prevention support. The partnership will also champion NHS England’s new Staying Safe from Suicide guidance, embedding its principles across club staff and driving adoption of the associated e-learning among mental health practitioners within club networks, ensuring best practice reaches those supporting players and fans. Further information on the Staying Safe from Suicide guidance and the associated e-learning is available, respectively, at the following two links:

This government recognises the invaluable contribution that Samaritans make every year to the lives of thousands of people experiencing a crisis or suicidal thoughts.
We engage with Samaritans and other voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations closely and will continue to work with them in their important role in suicide prevention efforts. Minister Peacock has met with Samaritans on World Suicide Prevention Day and this discussion focused on government support for the VCSE sector.
This government recently announced the publication of the Civil Society Covenant, which sets out the terms of a new relationship between government and civil society, and is a clear statement that government sees civil society as an indispensable partner in building a better Britain.

We have made no such assessment. The decision to close some of their branches is a matter for Samaritans.

That this House notes the annual Samaritans Awareness day to be held on 24 July 2025; highlights the charity’s wonderful work with those who need someone to talk to in recognition of the fact that mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year; further highlights that the term mental health covers a range from common problems, such as depression and anxiety, to rarer problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and often someone to talk to can make a real difference; thanks every person who works and volunteers in the organisation for providing that listening ear night and day, every day of the year; further thanks all those who donate to this very worthy cause; and wishes Samaritans every success as they continue to help those who need them the most throughout the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

That this House celebrates 50 years of Lancaster Samaritans and particularly commends Joan Guénault, a founder member of the branch, for her five decades of commitment to this charity; notes that in her 50 years’ service, Joan has not only taken between 8,000 and 10,000 calls but has also contributed to the smooth running and good reputation of the Lancaster branch, the north west region, and Samaritans as a whole; further congratulates Joan on receiving the Platinum Champion Award and welcomes her continued commitment to supporting others and in particular distressed callers; and commends the work of the Samaritans who are trained to actively listen to callers and support them as they themselves find a glimmer of a way forward.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether he has had recent discussion with the Samaritans on the potential merits of introducing new legislation aimed at tackling suicide and self harm.
The Department has discussed a range of issues relating to suicide and self-harm with Samaritans, including through the National Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group. These discussions have related to the Government’s Online Safety Bill to address harmful suicide and self-harm content online and the proposed introduction of a new offence relating to the encouragement or assistance of serious self-harm, as recommended by the Law Commission in its report on modernising communications offences, published in July 2021.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, whether volunteers in the Samaritans will be eligible for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, whether volunteers in the Samaritans will be eligible for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal.
To qualify for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal recipients must be in an eligible public sector role in a frontline emergency service. This does not include volunteers in the Samaritans. Equally, volunteers in the UK vaccination effort are not eligible for the Medal.
The Government does however recognise the extraordinary contributions made by people across communities in response to the pandemic, and notes the outstanding work of Samaritans’ volunteers.
The Prime Minister has announced that the government will establish a UK Commission on COVID Commemoration to consider the appropriate way to remember those who have lost their lives and to recognise those involved in the unprecedented response across all critical sectors. The Government will set out the Commission membership and terms of reference in due course.

That this House recognises the essential and emotionally sensitive work undertaken by volunteers at the Hamilton branch of the charity Samaritans; further recognises the significant contribution of volunteers over the last 18 months, which have sadly seen an increase in demand for their services, which they have worked hard to ensure continues to be provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week; notes the success of their many workstreams, which see them work with the local prison, with cross-disciplinary teams to identify areas of local concern so that services can provide targeted support, and provide extensive educational programmes and support across the community; celebrates the commitment of their many volunteers, particularly those that have committed over 40 years of their lives to the cause; and wishes the branch every success in their future works.

That this House praises the Samaritans' Brew Monday campaign which is raising awareness for the impact of Blue Monday, the third Monday in January, which typically causes low mental health for many people; highlights the effects of the covid-19 pandemic and lockdown on people’s mental health, with many people experiencing isolation and loneliness; encourages people to meet virtually over a cup of tea and a conversation; understands the importance of connecting over the phone to our friends, family and colleagues at this tough time; and reassures that despite this tough time there is hope ahead and light at the end of the tunnel with the covid-19 vaccination scheme.
