A decision was taken to reprioritise elements of the SKYNET programme to ensure continued delivery of assured and resilient satellite communications, focusing investment on capabilities that offer the greatest benefit and deliverability within the available resources/timeframe. Opportunities will be sought to exploit emerging technologies and a range of nationally separable, allied collaborative and commercial solutions will be investigated to meet future capability requirements.

The Skynet 6 programme has not been cancelled. There is continued investment in the delivery of the next generation of systems to support satellite communications out to the 2040s. As reported in the Defence Investment Plan, there has been a change in approach for one element of the Skynet 6 programme: the previously planned procurement of the Narrowband Satellite System has ceased in favour of delivery of equivalent capability through a more flexible approach which combines sovereign capability with modern technologies and "space-as-a-service" solutions alongside allies.

The National Infrastructure and Services Transformation Authority had scheduled a review of the Skynet 6 programme for November 2025 as part of routine monitoring of Category A projects. However, a shift to a conditions-based approach, aligning reviews with key programme milestones, has led to the review moving to a yet-to-be-agreed date later in the year. In the meantime, regular communication between the parties continues.

Where necessary, these will result in adjustments across the entire Ministry of Defence Space enterprise to both ground- and space-based elements, wherever its most advantageous.

The Skynet 6 Programme continues to progress to meet Defence’s satellite communication needs. The build of the Skynet 6A satellite has transitioned into the testing and validation phase. The contracted in-service date is August 2026. Negotiations for the acquisition of the Enduring Capability satellites are progressing. The in-service dates will be agreed as part of that process, which remains commercial sensitive until the competition and final negotiations conclude.

The ground infrastructure has remained fully operational.
