Sony is an important investor in the UK employing around 6,000 people. Sony has recently taken a decision to set up a subsidiary in Amsterdam as part of their EU exit contingency planning. Sony have said they are not planning to change any of the functions in the UK, including the number of jobs in the UK HQ at this time.
The Department for International Trade teams in the UK and Japan actively promote and support increasing investment and trade between Japan and the UK and will continue to do so after we leave the EU. This was discussed by both Prime Minsters during PM Abe’s recent visit to the UK.

There have been no such discussions with BEIS Ministers and officials. Sony have confirmed that they intend to set up a subsidiary in Amsterdam as part of their EU exit contingency planning. As has been widely reported, this will not result in any jobs being lost in the UK.

The Bridgend area in south Wales has for a long time been one of the leading places in Wales in terms of job creation, employment and economic growth. Today, however, we have had the devastating news that one of our large inward investors, Sony in Bridgend and Pencoed, which has employed hundreds of the work force over 30 years, has made the sad decision that because of the decline in old-fashioned tube technology for colour television, it will be sacrificing up to 650 jobs.
Will the Prime Minister join me in extending his thanks to the work force of Sony Bridgend, who are very skilled and hard-working? Will he also use his good offices to work with the Secretary of State for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government to do what this Government do well, which is to put in place a rescue package for that work force to provide the high-paid, high-skill jobs that will lead Bridgend into a good future for that work force and their families?

I am sorry that my hon. Friend's constituents have lost their jobs at Bridgend, and he is absolutely right in saying that it is our responsibility as a Government to put in place a proper package of support and help. I know that he will have meetings with Ministers, and I am happy to see him myself about that and to ensure that we put in place every assistance that we possibly can. The situation is particularly tragic since it comes at a time when, yet again, this country has been designated No. 1 for foreign direct investment in the European Union—so we are drawing in jobs. Unfortunately, however, for the reasons to which he rightly draws attention, the changing way that the market is working means that it is very hard for people to remain secure in their jobs, even with excellent companies, such as Sony. However, we will certainly do everything that we can to help people in that situation.

Mr. Wigley: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what representations he has received on his industrial policy for
the electronics industry in relation to job losses announced by Panasonic and Sony in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Howells: [holding answer 30 October 2000]: I have not received any representations from the electronics industry in relation to
the recent announcements by Panasonic and Sony.
With the transfer of devolved powers to the National Assembly for Wales, such representations would be referred to them.
Of course, I very much regret the job losses. The NAW is working closely with local partners and the Department for Education and
Employment to provide assistance to those affected.
Michael German (National Assembly Deputy First Minister) and David Rowe Beddoe (Chairman of the Welsh Development Agency) met with
senior managers from Panasonic on 27 October 2000 and Mr. German attended the meeting of the Welsh Electronics Forum on 31 October
2000. The Forum has established a special taskforce to deal with the after effects of job losses in the consumer electronics sector
in Wales which will meet in the very near future.
The Government were alerted to the announcements prior to their publication on a confidential basis. Such decisions are ultimately
commercial ones for the companies to take themselves to ensure their long term future. It is not the Government's policy to
intervene in such decisions. In such a competitive sector as consumer electronics where companies operate on a global scale, costs
are under constant review. It would be surprising, and rather worrying, if companies did not feel the need to re-assess and
re-structure their operations from time to time.
Both companies are still employing around 3,000 people in Wales between them and are committed to continuing their presence in
Wales. Both are hoping to bring new higher value, more sophisticated production to their Welsh plants in the near future, and are
investing heavily in their research and development facilities in Wales. This demonstrates the confidence that both companies have
in the UK.
The best contribution that the Government can make is to secure long term economic stability based on low inflation and sound public
finances. This will allow business to invest and plan ahead with confidence.
