That this House marks Srebrenica Memorial Week 2026 and commemorates the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were murdered because of their Muslim identity; believes that remembrance of Srebrenica sends a powerful message that we must never forget where anti-Muslim hatred, dehumanisation, and division can lead; remembers all those who were murdered, displaced, bereaved, and affected by the genocide and the wider atrocities committed during the Bosnian War, including up to 50,000 women and girls who were subjected to rape and sexual violence as weapons of war; recognises the judgments of international courts that the massacre at Srebrenica constituted genocide; pays tribute to survivors, victims’ families, the Mothers of Srebrenica, and all those who continue to preserve the memory of those who were killed; commends the work of Remembering Srebrenica, including its national and regional boards, volunteers, Community Champions and partners, in educating people across the United Kingdom through schools, local authorities, places of worship, community organisations, police forces, and civic institutions about the consequences of anti-Muslim hatred, dehumanisation, division, and genocide denial; reaffirms the importance of remembrance, truth, justice, peace, and social cohesion; and calls on the Government to continue supporting Srebrenica genocide education, remembrance, and initiatives that help prevent future atrocities.

The UK has underlined with Serbia's government, including President Vučić, our concerns about June's "All Serb Assembly" and the subsequent Declaration. Events in Srebrenica were genocide, as confirmed by the International Court of Justice. The verdicts handed down are against individuals; no one ethnicity bears responsibility for the crimes committed during the conflict. Genocide denial is abhorrent and must end. Building a stable, prosperous and inclusive future for all citizens in the region requires acknowledgement of the facts. The UK encourages regional co-operation on reconciliation efforts and in finding ways to heal wounds and work together towards a shared future.
To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, whether he plans to support the draft UN resolution tabled by Rwanda, Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina on declaring 11 July as an international day of reflection and remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.
To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, whether he plans to support the draft UN resolution tabled by Rwanda, Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina on declaring 11 July as an international day of reflection and remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.
The UK is proud to support the draft resolution. The atrocities that took place at Srebrenica were a genocide, as confirmed by the International Courts. We must never forget the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
To ask His Majesty's Government how much funding they have provided to the organisation Remembering Srebrenica in each financial year since its establishment; and what plans they have to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the genocide that was committed there.

*For the current financial year, £75,000 has been issued so far, with the final £75,000 tranche of funding expected to be released in March. This is subject to progress against key milestones as set out in Remembering Srebrenica’s workplan.
Regarding the 30th anniversary of the genocide, it is important that such a significant anniversary is appropriately commemorated, including by the UK Government.
May I remind the Deputy Prime Minister and the House that yesterday was National Remembering Srebrenica Day? May I particularly point out a little-known fact? British soldiers took about 2,000 civilians out of Srebrenica in April 1993. Those British soldiers were from B Squadron 9th/12th Lancers. It is not widely known, but, under my command, they saved a huge number of lives by taking those people out of Srebrenica. They, too, should be remembered for their very gallant actions, because it was very dangerous.

I pay tribute to my right hon. and gallant Friend and to all those whom he commanded in the 1990s. We must honour the memory of those killed, and pay tribute to the extraordinary courage shown by their families, survivors and all those members of our armed forces, who served so gallantly in that situation.

I entirely agree and thank the hon. Member for his intervention. We need to continue to work on this and take action across the board, so that these things do not happen again.
Bosnia was a horrific reminder of the vulnerability of ordinary people. It made me question how that could...

I welcome the debate and commend all those who called for it. I worked in Bosnia during and after the war, and visited the site of the Srebrenica memorial to the genocide of more than 8,000 people in July 1995.
My hon. Friend refers to saying, “Never again”. Does she agree...

My hon. Friend is absolutely right that we need to be vigilant. Especially in the western Balkans, as she has rightly said, issues of ethnic nationalism are arising, and the Serbians are trying to hide the fact that this event ever happened. I am grateful for the fact that the...

I entirely agree. I know that the Minister does listen, so I hope she will take back to others in the Foreign Office the point about more spending and more resources in the western Balkans to ensure that we do not have any further eruptions there.
I say gently that...

Every year when we reflect on the horrors of the Srebrenica genocide, we all reiterate our commitment to stamping out the Islamophobia, prejudice and intolerance that led to the murder of the 8,000 Muslim men and boys in 1995, yet we are witnessing the ethnic cleansing of Uyghur Muslims at...

I thank my hon. Friend and I entirely agree. I do not normally criticise colleagues, but comments were made recently by a certain Home Secretary and she needs to reflect on what she says. Those kinds of things do not help in the situation we are facing.

It is worth putting on the record the fact that funding has been cut from £200,000 to £100,000, so we are not asking for a great deal to ensure we debate this issue. It should come as a bit of a surprise that the funding cut has come at the...

I am delighted that so many people across the House are making the case for appropriately funding Remembering Srebrenica, but it is slightly worse than has been indicated: the funding was not just cut but did not materialise for a long time. I want to thank the right hon. Member...
