Growth is this Government's central mission, and increasing trade and investment with international partners, including Taiwan, will support that objective. Taiwan is the UK's sixth-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region, with total bilateral trade reaching £8.9 billion in 2025.
At the recent 28th annual UK-Taiwan Trade Talks, both sides reaffirmed our shared ambition to grow trade and investment between our markets, using mechanisms including the UK-Taiwan Enhanced Trade Partnership and the work of the Office for Investment to deliver commercial outcomes.

The UK does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but maintains a strong unofficial relationship based on deep and growing ties across a wide range of areas. The UK Government continues to strengthen this relationship through trade, education, science and technology cooperation, and ministerial and official engagement. We also support Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organisations where statehood is not a requirement for membership, and as an observer where it is.

My Department supports businesses seeking to enter overseas markets, including Taiwan, through its export support services and overseas network. The UK has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but a strong, unofficial relationship. As of 1 August 2026, approximately 52 staff worked at the British Office Taipei. This comprises both staff from the UK and staff employed locally.

Over one third of global maritime trade passes through the South China Sea. Consequently, all countries have a clear interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The UK's position is consistent: that any cross-Strait issues must be settled peacefully by the people on both sides of the Strait through constructive dialogue, without the threat or use of force or coercion.

All CPTPP accession applications remain under consideration by CPTPP members, and any decision to progress applications must be agreed by consensus.
The UK Government does not provide an ongoing commentary on applications to protect the confidentiality of CPTPP discussions and to observe the collective principles of the group. The UK Government has met with Taiwan, and other applicants, to discuss the UK's own experience of the accession process.
The UK has a strong trading relationship with Taiwan and engages on trade policy priorities with Taiwan through annual Trade Talks and the delivery of the UK-Taiwan Enhanced Trade Partnership.
