That this House acknowledges the unwavering dedication of the Flamstead Toad Patrol, a community-led initiative that guides common toads safely through hazardous areas during their annual journey to ancient breeding grounds; commends the volunteers who brave the cold, dark and wet conditions to protect this native species now facing decline; expresses deep concern over the severe health hazards posed by sewage discharges in the River Ver downstream of the Markyate Sewage Works; acknowledges the grave risk of contamination from E. coli and other dangerous pathogens that volunteers encounter; highlights the mental toll on volunteers who, despite their love for nature, are burdened by the fear of exposure to poorly treated sewage; and calls for immediate action to address the pollution, safeguarding both the environment and the valiant community members who strive to make a difference.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether the installation by a local authority of warning signs in the road indicating that (a) toads and (b) ducks may be crossing is required to be approved by his Department.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether the installation by a local authority of warning signs in the road indicating that (a) toads and (b) ducks may be crossing is required to be approved by his Department.
Local authorities may install the toad crossing warning sign only during the migratory period at a site which is approved by the Froglife Trust. The wild fowl warning sign may be installed where birds are habitually found in the road near ponds and watercourses. Both signs are prescribed in The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 and need no further approval.

The Government reports on the implementation of the EU Habitats Directive, including the conservation status of a number of key habitats and European Protected Species, of which natterjack toad is one. The latest report was published in 2013 and assessed a number of important factors including range, population trends, habitat and pressures on the species.
In summary, this highlighted that natterjack toad distribution in England is well understood and that long term trends show that sites where they can be found, in England, have improved in habitat quantity and quality due to conservation interventions, particularly management funded by Wildlife Enhancement Schemes and Stewardship Schemes.

It is not possible to identify the number of defendants prosecuted for an offence involving Natterjack Toads from centrally held data. Published information on offences under section 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 covers broader offences and other animals.
In 2017, there were 2 prosecutions under section 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and 12 prosecutions in the last five years (these figures relate to all offences under section 9 and animals which are listed under schedule 5).
