The UK is monitoring water supply issues in north east Syria, which are limiting 5 million people's access to water. We have raised the humanitarian issue of water availability with all parties in the region, including Turkey, and we are working with our partners to prioritise our funds for the most acute needs.
The UK also continues to monitor health across Syria closely, and responded specifically to the Cholera outbreak with a £2 million contribution to UNICEF's response announced in November 2022 to help prevent the spread of cholera, including in north east Syria.

The UK has been supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East’s (UNRWA) to ensure that the needs of highly vulnerable Palestinians are addressed inside Syria and in neighbouring countries. To date, the UK has allocated over £38 million to UNRWA to provide food parcels, relief items, hygiene packs, education and cash assistance for Palestinian refugees affected by the violence in Syria and the region. This includes £5 million of un-earmarked funding towards UNRWA’s appeal in Syria in 2015, which allows UNRWA to allocate funding to priority areas.
In August 2015, UNRWA was able to provide basic healthcare in Yalda on four occasions, treating 54 suspected cases of typhoid. UNRWA also distributed 400,000 water purification tablets provided by UNICEF.

Typhoid vaccine is available from Sanofi Pasteur MSD (“Typhim Vi”) and MASTA (“Vivotif”), neither of whom is currently experiencing any supply problems.

Typhoid vaccination is not part of a national routine immunisation programme. The vaccine is purchased by both National Health Service and private practices and clinics directly from the vaccine manufacturers.
We are aware that there are issues relating to manufacture and supply which are continuing to impact on the availability of typhoid vaccine, although orders are currently being taken by two of the three manufacturers.

Typhoid is rare in this country and is usually associated with travel to countries where sanitation is inadequate.
We understand from manufacturers that vaccine is available to order and that they are continuing to take actions to ensure that supplies are maintained.

Typhoid vaccination is not part of a national routine immunisation programme. Typhoid vaccine is purchased directly by general practitioner surgeries from suppliers for their patients and is not procured centrally by the department.
The department is working with vaccine manufacturers to understand the current supply issues and help resolve any immediate shortages, by liaising with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency where appropriate.
