We plan to make a £14 million contribution to Unitaid in December this year. We are proud of the UK's strong support of Unitaid for nearly 20 years and their groundbreaking achievements in promoting equitable access to life-saving health innovations. Unitaid remain a trusted and high-performing partner.

Unitaid are a leading funder of innovative tools to find and treat cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries. We highly value our Unitaid partnership and have contributed more than half a billion pounds in funding.

The UK remains a major donor and champion of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights to improve women's health. This includes continuing to support the Global Financing Facility (GFF), the Reproductive Health Supplies programme, UNFPA, and the Women's Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) and WISH Dividend programmes. The UK is one of the largest donors to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance who have immunised 16 million girls and averted 387,000 cervical cancer deaths over the last decade through HPV vaccination programmes.

NHS England runs Help Us Help You campaigns to increase knowledge of cancer symptoms and address barriers to acting on them, to encourage people to come forward as soon as possible to see their general practitioner. The campaigns focus on a range of symptoms, encouraging body awareness to help people spot symptoms across a wide range of cancers at an early point.

The Department highly values its partnership with Unitaid, and has contributed more than half a billion pounds in funding.

Unitaid are a leading funder of innovative tools to find and treat cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries, with HPV tests the most accurate way to identify if a woman is at higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Together with partners, Unitaid's interventions lowered the cost of HPV testing by nearly 40 per cent and reduced the price of portable thermal ablation devices for treating precancerous lesions by more than 45 per cent. Unitaid's work is laying the groundwork for national cervical cancer elimination programs worldwide. We highly value our Unitaid partnership and have contributed more than half a billion pounds in funding.

We welcome recent analysis from UNITAID and Cambridge Economic Policy Associates showing they deliver £46 of impact for every £1 invested.

The FCDO regularly engages with key partners including the Global Fund, UNITAID, UNAIDS and grassroots organisation the Robert Carr Fund, as part of our ongoing commitment to the HIV response and advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights, including for vulnerable groups. This includes through our Board representation, bilateral dialogue and programmatic funding.

The UK has a 20-year donor arrangement with Unitaid from 2007-2026, for a total commitment of €1.1 billion converted to £789 million at the outset. The UK has contributed £574 million to date. Allocations for 2025-26 and beyond will form part of the next Spending Review process.

The UK welcomed the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation on 2 October 2023 of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine for the prevention of malaria in children. We supported the decision by the Gavi board in December 2021 to launch a malaria vaccine programme, including with support through the UK's contribution to Gavi, and look forward to Gavi supporting the future rollout of R21 once Pre-Qualified by WHO. The UK's £1.65 billion funding from 2021 to 2025 to Gavi will immunise 75 million children and save up to 2 million lives from vaccine preventable diseases, including malaria. Our £1 billion pledge to the 7th replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will help to distribute 86 million mosquito nets and provide malaria treatment and care for 18 million people. UK support to Unitaid will help countries to optimise the introduction of new malaria prevention tools and help to ensure that malaria medicines and tools are affordable and accessible for all.

Unitaid has become a significant actor within the global health landscape. Over their last strategic period (2017-2021), Unitaid contributed to saving 758,000 lives, averted 133 million cases of mortality from HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, and evidenced $2.3 billion in economic savings reached through the improved affordability of treatments due to voluntary licenses and health system efficiencies that are expected to have a demonstrable effect on progress towards the global health targets, in particular for HIV, TB and malaria.

These include indicative total figures for all multilateral organisations of £3.311 billion in 2022-2023 and £3.974 billion in 2023-2024. We are working with multilateral partners on the profile of commitments. Funding for 2024-25 onwards are subject to the new Spending Review.

Funding settlements are being communicated to multilateral partners, including the health multilaterals and have already been sent to Unitaid.

Since its creation in 2006, Unitaid has been a major player in scaling up access to life-saving drugs and diagnostics for those most in need. It has shown us that small, catalytic investments can dramatically change the global health landscape, allowing us to treat more women and children with less money and better products. The United Kingdom is proud to be the second largest donor to Unitaid, with an investment of £188 million since 2013, including: £53 million in 2013, £40 million in 2014 and £88 million in 2017.

Unitaid does not provide any funding to the Clinton Foundation. Unitaid is also highly transparent and accountable organisation that regularly provides detailed financial and programmatic updates through the Audit and Finance Committee, Policy and Strategy Committee and Executive Board. The United Kingdom sits on all of Unitaid’s governance committees and is Vice-Chair of the Board.
