GOVERNMENT POLICY ON THE FISHING INDUSTRY

That this House registers its concern about the beleaguered state of the fishing industry in the British Isles and notes that, since the sovereignty of United Kingdom waters was surrendered to the Common Fisheries Policy in 1972, Great Britain has been reduced to supplying only 20 per cent. of its own needs; further notes that Norway voted against joining the Common Fisheries Policy; congratulates Canada on its robust stance against the Spanish, welcomes the widespread support of the British people for Canada by their display of the Maple Leaf Flag; and calls on the Government to undertake a wholesale reform of the Common Fisheries Policy as part of the Intergovernmental Conference, thus placing the interests of British fishermen first and thereby enabling them to determine the future of their own industry.
