Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor David Clelland (Labour), on Thursday, 8 December 1994, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 18 members in total.
SAFEWAY, GATESHEAD
That this House considers the decision of Safeway to close its Gateshead town centre store as a consequence of the opening of its new out of town store to be in sharp contrast to the recent pronouncements of the Secretary of State for the Environment; finds it inconsistent of the Secretary of State to have overruled the local authority by granting planning permission for the new store and naive of him to have believed the assurances of Safeway that closures would not be consequent; and therefore calls on the Secretary of State to resign forthwith.
