ARMS TO INDONESIA

That this House condemns the continued denial of the rights of the people of East Timor by the Indonesian government; notes with concern the fact that, in spite of 10 UN resolutions over the past 20 years, Her Majesty's Government continues to support the genocidal actions of the Suharto regime including by the morally and legally reprehensible provision of export licences allowing British Aerospace to sell Hawk jets to Indonesia; believes that the Scott Inquiry team should be asked to investigate the role of the British Government in allowing sales which are contrary to international and national guidelines; and finally calls for the immediate cancellation of the deliveryof the Hawk jets and all other weapons to Indonesia until such inquiry has taken place.

leave out from `House' to end and add `notes the considerable investment over the last 20 years by the government of Indonesia in East Timor; further notes that the contract to supply Hawk Trainers was signed by the last Labour Government only three years after the occupation of East Timor, following its abandonment by Portugal; notes further that the performance of the Hawk jet contract complies fully with international law and that despite constant accusations to the contrary there is no evidence that these aircraft are used for internal repression; notes further that many thousands of British jobs are involved in trade with trade in Indonesia; further notes the substantial and successful efforts made by the government of Indonesia to improve its record on human rights; and deplores the constant unjustified denigration and misrepresentation of the actions of a friendly country which ill serves the people of both Indonesia and Great Britain alike.'.
