Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Maria Fyfe (Labour), on Monday, 11 November 1996, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 108 members in total.
PAY REVIEW BODY FOR UNIVERSITY STAFF
That this House calls for an independent pay review body to assess a fair salary for each grade of staff; deplores the Universities and Colleges Employers' Association's refusal either to negotiate or refer its offer to binding arbitration; notes that university staff have coped with a huge expansion in the student population while the pay of a main grade lecturer has risen by 0 per cent. in real terms since 1981; and therefore supports the higher education unions' decision to ballot their members on strike action, while noting that this action can be avoided if honourable Members are prepared to give their support to an independent review.
