Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alan Simpson (Labour), on Tuesday, 21 July 1998, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 30 members in total.

GM FIELD TRIALS

That this House welcomes the Court of Appeal ruling that it was illegal for field trials of genetic maize in Devon to have been allowed without first having met the statutory legal requirements relating to national seed list trials; regrets that the court failed to go on to rule that GM crop trials be removed; recognises that there is now a moral obligation to do so; values the legal requirements that two replicated trials must be conducted before any national field trials can proceed; and calls for a moratorium on all GM field trials until the wider consequences for human health and environmental well-being have been fully explored.
