Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Hilton Dawson (Labour), on Monday, 11 May 1998, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 20 members in total.

RUSKIN LIBRARY AT LANCASTER UNIVERSITY

That this House congratulates Lancaster University on the official opening of the Ruskin Library by Her Royal Highn ess Princess Alexandra on 9th May; notes that the splendid national resource will ensure the safe-keeping of John Ruskin's papers for use by future scholars; anticipates that daily public access to exhibitions of Ruskin's work will be a popular complement to displays in his home at Brantwood on Lake Coniston; acknowledges the vital work of Professor Michael Wheeler, Director of the Ruskin Programme at Lancaster University, the outstanding design by the architect of the new library, Richard MacCormack, and the financial support of the National Heritage Lottery Fund; and furthermore recognises that this archive, which contains much of the enduring artistic, literary, environmental and political legacy of Ruskin, is yet another priceless cultural asset for the historic City of Lancaster, demonstrating once again that it is a place of true class and style.
