Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Roseanna Cunningham (Scottish National Party), on Wednesday, 11 June 1997, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 24 members in total.
COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP OF THE ISLE OF EIGG
That this House congratulates the Isle of Eigg Trust on their successful takeover of the ownership of the island; praises the courage and determination the islanders have demonstrated throughout their campaign; trusts that the Government will provide social and economic support to the community to assist them in the relief of poverty and promotion of sustainable development on the island; recognises that the unique partnership between the community, the Highland Council and the Scottish Wildlife Trust sets a positive example of a viable alternative to the current system of landholding; acknowledges that many communities throughout Scotland continue to face uncertain futures; and therefore calls on the Government to establish a democratic system of landholding throughout Scotland to prevent similar land misuse and abuse.
