Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Brian Sedgemore (Labour), on Thursday, 8 February 1990, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 38 members in total.
Funding of the Arts by Westminster City Council
That this House condemns the Conservative-controlled Westminster City Council for reducing its grants to the English National Opera and the English National Ballet as well as for offering only standstill grants to the ICA and the Photographer's Gallery; and calls on Westminster City Council to behave responsibly and accept that a great Capital City like London must pour more money into culture and the arts if it is to retain the respect of the rest of the civilised world.

- Leave out from 'House' to end and add 'is pleased to note that the Arts Council has been able to increase its grants to the English National Opera and the English National Ballet by ??2.5 million to compensate for the shortfall caused by changes in local government finances in excess of the recently increased grants of ??8.5 million, up over 11 per cent. this year, due to the substantial increase in the Arts Council's grant of 22 per cent. over the next three years, which they received through the efforts of the Minister for the Arts in securing this generous settlement.'.
