Early day motion, on Wednesday, 14 June 2000, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 43 members in total.

THREAT TO ESSEX MEALS ON WHEELS

That this House notes with alarm that the Tory led Essex County Council is currently reviewing the Meals on Wheels Service and is considering getting rid of it and replacing it with an advanced delivery of frozen foods; further notes that 550 people in Basildon alone currently have hot meals delivered to their home because Essex County has deemed that they are unable to prepare meals themselves or are a danger to others in preparing a meal and that the Meals on Wheels Service also provides an essential social link for many people; and therefore calls on Essex County Council to immediately abandon plans to deliver frozen foods.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received an amendment.

THREAT TO ESSEX MEALS ON WHEELS (858A1)
The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by Teddy Taylor (primary, Conservative) and tabled on Thursday, 22 June 2000. It has been signed by 3 members in total.
Leave out from 'House' to end and add 'while fully accepting the merits of the delivery of hot meals, deplores the unfair and misleading attempts of Labour honourable Members to misinterpret the action of Essex County Council which is simply undertaking a five year Best Value Review as required by Government; and believes that Labour honourable Members concerned with welfare issues would be better directed to enquire why the then Labour-controlled Council in Southend imposed sharp and savage new charges for services provided to the elderly and disabled, which have happily been cancelled by the new Conservative-controlled Council.'.
