Massacre at Germiston Station, South Africa

That this House expresses its horror at the massacre of striking workers by armed South African Transport Services (SATS) vigilantes, with the connivance of the South African Police, at Germiston Station near Johannesburg on 9th January 1990; notes that this massacre is the latest in a series of attacks launched by SATS and their agents in an attempt to break the 10-week-old railway strike; also notes that none of those responsible for the deaths and assaults on striking workers has yet been charged; draws attention to the fact that the Germiston massacre took place on the very day that the Railway Workers Union, SARWHU, had planned to report back to railway workers on the SATS latest offer in the dispute; calls upon the Government to insist that the South African authorities carry out the fullest inquiry into the events at Germiston to ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice and that aid and assistance are provided to the victims and their families; and failing such thorough and immediate action on the part of the South African Government, calls upon the Government to demand the closure of the South African Railways' and South African Airways' offices in London and to terminate South African Airways' landing rights in the United Kingdom.
