Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alan Simpson (Labour), on Tuesday, 18 June 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 24 members in total.

THE WORLD CUP AND INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY

That this House congratulates the USA football team on their impressive victory that took them into the quarter finals of the World Cup; recognises that this success has been built on a commitment to team work and fair play, strictly pursued within agreed international rules; and invites President Bush to adopt the same approach to US foreign policy by pledging that the only strike force the United States would send to Iraq would be the football team, the only acceptable shoot-out would be a penalty shoot-out, and the World Cup principle of inclusive internationalism would override any temptation to military unilateralism.
