RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

That this House notes that the Government's White Paper on energy policy is due to be published around the turn of the year; highlights how the deadline for responses to the consultation document is 13th September this year; urges all interested parties to respond by this deadline stressing how first, nuclear power is not a solution, consistently proving to be one of the most expensive forms of commercial electricity generation and creating the problem of nuclear waste for which no adequate solution has been devised, secondly, energy policies should look as far ahead as 2050 and set ambitious targets of 10 per cent. of United Kingdom electricity needs to be meet from renewable resources by 2010 and 50 per cent. by 2050, thirdly, that a truly ambitious programme for solar energy of 100,000 roofs by 2010 should be established as in countries such as Japan and Germany, and fourthly, energy conservation and efficiency should have a major role and can reduce energy use 30 per cent. on current levels by 2050; and urges the Government, in the shorter term, to take action to level the playing field, to promote and enable all consumers to choose to purchase electricity from green suppliers and the most energy efficient electrical products.
