PEACE TRAIN AND BELFAST TAXI-DRIVERS

That this House strongly commends the Peace Train Organisations in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Britain for extending their Peace Train campaign to include the defence of Belfast taxi-drivers and other transport workers' right to live and right to work and the public's right to go about its business without fear of violence and terror; believes that these human rights are fundamental to a democractic society; encourages democrats of all parties and none to resist this horrendous assault on human rights; joins in the Peace Train Organisation's forthright condemnation of those sectarian gangs responsible for the recent wave of brutal assassinations of taxi-drivers; trusts that the Peace Train Organisation can secure the active solidarity of taxi-drivers and other transport workers around these islands; notes that the British Peace Train Organisation already has the backing of several transport unions and the personal support of TGWU General Secretary, Ron Todd, whose executive approved a ??1000 donation; and hopes that more trade unions, business groups and others will support the Peace Train Organisation's campaigns for an end to paramilitary terror.
