WEMBLEY NATIONAL STADIUM

That this House notes that, comparing the Birmingham and Wembley sites proposed for a new national football stadium, unlike Wembley, the Birmingham proposal has still to assemble the land required for the stadium, that the new Wembley Stadium will be served by more than 100 trains per hour compared with the current 14 per hour for Birmingham International, that 80 per cent. of journeys to and from Wembley will be by public transport compared with 20 per cent. at Birmingham with it taking up to six hours to clear the huge car parks required there, that the Wembley proposal is on a brownfield site with planning permission in place; whereas the Birmingham plans to build on green belt would require a lengthy and uncertain public inquiry, that only the Wembley proposal can raise the premium seat income required to finance a sustainable scheme, and journey times to London and Wembley are faster from most regional cities than to Birmingham because of the national rail infrastructure; further notes the problems encountered by England fans securing tickets for major games such as the recent England v Germany World Cup qualifier and that football cannot afford any further delay in starting work on its new national stadium; recognises the overwhelming case for Wembley as the only feasible site; and calls on the Government to work with the Football Association and the Mayor of London to deliver a national stadium the whole country can be proud of at Wembley.
